I would make a Zandronum version with what TheShooter7 proposed if I had any idea how do code. It should just be trivial to change the window accepting input when not active and running at full FPS when not active.
(CL_SoundWhenNotActive is already a thing.)

I'd hate to point out what should be obvious to you more experienced Doomers, but Doom Legacy does have 2 player split screen functionality that works pretty good, and Legacy 2 was supposed to have 4 players but that port sucks balls and it's not maintained anymore. Never tried with another person but still both players are controllable. With regular Doom it probably won't take an engine rewrite but as people said before it wouldn't be so practical on anything ZDoom based.

This. 4 computers and screens playing the same game sucks more energy than just one unit and one screen with one controllers for each of the 4 players. The old F12 Co-op spy would be obsolete cause you could just look at your friends' screens.

You are right, but of course, it would be require to rewrite all the engine.

When I checked legacy's splitscreen last time.. the game kept crashing randomly.

Good luck implementing this.
This.
While it's nowhere near impossible to make, it's far too much work to make feasible, and for what? So you can fight over who gets which half of the keyboard?

Just give the other player numpads.. he'll regret and stop playing, then leaves you to play with the full board!

Not exactly. The engine has to be made aware that there's more than one client in a single instance of the game from what I recall. Not an entire engine rewrite.

Also, I used to play a fuckload of Doom Legacy back in the day. I'd usually hook a USB hub, and 2 keyboards/mice up to the PC, and it worked. Both myself and my stepbrother used to fire up legacy on the PC, and sit playing CO-OP. Sometimes, if we had others around, we'd hook the PC up to the TV through S-Video, and use a couple of controllers. There was also a doom port called WDMP (WinDoom Multiplayer), which was a modified port WinDoom, which we used when we wanted to play with 4 people.

It's not a total rewrite, but it's also not as simple as CTRL+H'ing all instances of ConsolePlayer. Much of the code needs to be rethought and reworked to accomidate multiple ConsolePlayers.

No because I thought it was in the wrong section or something while I was attempting to move another THREAD (<--- I really have got to take a break) on the other forums.

Split screen is understandably not going to happen, but why all the hate? It looks like a lot of people want it (not necessarily me). It's not "totally useless," "unwanted," or even "impossible." The only downside is that it's too difficult to be worthwhile.

Why not just add the feature I was discussing over in my own post earlier, http://zandronum.com/forum/showthread.p ... 6#pid24776, and modify it so that you can add a borderless mode (Which can be done externally, but putting it in the port itself would be an accessibility thing,) and make it receive input and continue updating the renderer when the inactive window? Of course, you'd have to put a toggle switch in, to keep, say, the paper you were supposed to be writing from wreaking havoc with your deathmatch session, but it doesn't take a full engine rewrite to run a server and multiple clients on the same machine, the only trick is allowing them to receive simultaneous input and maintain different control lists. I achieved the latter by installing two copies of Zandorum, mapping them to two different PS2 gamepads, and running a local server from doomseeker, but it should be possible, albeit more work, to make the option to install three additional copies of the Zandronum exe, registered in the system as separate programs, that each use their own configuration settings. the accessibility options are just extra, but the bit about allowing multiple simultanious clients to receive controller input at the same time is really all you need for the more desperate players to figure it out from there.

Splitscreen would be a wicked idea. I had a thought about it before when I saw Doom Jedi's split wolf mod and I thought it would be quite good to have in a port. I've never tried out Legacy's version but have been meaning to.

Oh, man, you should have researched better
And I don't mean just splitscreen ports, but actual commercial games.
As just one example - google "Lotus III - Ultimate Challenge". One of my favourite games.

Can give more examples.

Someone mentioned doomjedi? Heh
Thanks you reminding people of "SplitWolf" - our SplitScreen port for "Wolfenstein 3D". We've released beta 2 not that long ago, with new art, bugfixes and features.

I played "Legacy" much (also) in SplitScreen with many people, and it was pure fun.
I'm a big fan of splitscreen, and it does work well on PC/keyboard, at least for 2 players (can't speak for more).

I wish more old games would have SplitScreen ports.

If someone is interested in more such projects - can try to help.

Hey Striker, you managed to get controllers to work with doom legacy? I can't figure it out at all. Zandronum/Zdoom have such simple, easy joystick support that I don't really know what I'm doing wrong when it comes to Legacy  It's been years.

Some of my friends are FPS fiends, but only play with a damn 360 controller (I hate playing with a controller, but I'm glad it works so well in ZD). They love Doom, but 1 player to 1 computer sucks ass and is totally impractical nowadays. If any more progress is made with this idea, I'd be stoked. Doom is a very social game and this would be pure improvement and definitely worth a lot of effort, and I honestly think it would serve to boost the game's popularity amongst more modern players immensely. Gaming is a social thing! But hey, I'm not really expecting it since a lot of people be hatin'.

Playing doom with a friend on 1 PC hooked up to a big TV, with the choice of a player using a hand controller? Yes please!

Hey, Remood has splitscreen - http://remood.org/standard/index.php?page=download
(ahem, hint hint, click on automatic builds)

And it works, there I just saved everyone a few hours of dragging on this argument.

If you want to play a lag free game of doom, buy a foldout round table, get your buddies to bring over some computers and start up your own lan. It's almost too easy not to pass up.
