Topic to help people with english

#1

Post by ibm5155 » Thu Jan 23, 2014 11:44 am

I know a lot of people here get annoyed by bad engish; which gave me this idea!

Got a question you wanna post? Wanna show off your mods but have broken english and too afraid to write it? feel free to post it here
anyway so others fix it for you.

Now stay away from google translator because it'll make you look even worse most of the time, and its better to use a dictionary
to find the words you need most of the times instead of using it.

Anyway feel free to post your walls of text here and maybe someone will fix it :D.

my version...
I know that many people here get annoy by wrong grammar texts, and that's why I got this idea a long time ago.

So if you have some question, like you want to make a conversation on your mod but you don't know how to write it on the right way you could copy and paste your text here, so people would fix it for you :D

I know google translator is really good nowadays but, he's not perfect and it can't fix all the mistakes (even I use it sometimes to check if what did I wrote was right :s)...

So feel free to post your text here :D (also if you find some bad grammar on this text too, feel free to say where did i wrong :) )
A- for the idea, C for the effort. Still, a good idea :D Hopefully we'll see less of those annoying broken walls of text.

I don't like it; it feels simplistic and still has (edit: VERY MANY) spelling/grammatical errors.

I did my own take.
Spoiler: take three (Open)
This is an English forum. There are people here who expect one's English to approach at least high school level, which for those new to English is impractical; therefore, I propose that this thread be used for people who do have mastery of English to help revise the posts of those who don't. While mainly for mod posts, any large post needing revision is eligible.

All else being equal, which mod looks better: one with a grammatically flawless and well-written description, or one that looks like it was written by a third-grader in the USA at best? Presentation is important.

Results are guaranteed to be better than Google Translate, although that's not saying much. Be prepared to clarify what you meant; there's no guarantee that what you meant is apparent.

Here's another one

Code: Select all

"How to increase your frames when it's raining
WARNING:If this tutorial still not help you to increaseframes, try to lower the resolution or disabling fog!!!"

Code: Select all

if you want to rain move, crouch, press open button or fire. If not wait for 7 seconds for the tutorial start...
So what I wanted to mean with this one is if the player don't want the rainfall script to be activated he shouldn't press the mouse or the keyb, if not it would start...

I'm not asking something so formal, but something that most people would understand :) (but without the evil english mistakes D:)

This is a tutorial message for a ingame help

Code: Select all

This mod contains a weather effect that may be taxing on slower computers.
If you would like to disable this effect, press any key before the tutorial starts.
I reversed the condition because, honestly, this works better with the many people who are prone to clicking randomly.

ehm, this simple words (in, on, at) I remembered how to use it, but the time passed, and I actually didn't use it alot so I missed how to use it :s
So when do I use it?

If I remember it used on for something that's on the top of other thing ("the book is on the table :V"), in about something is not at the top but on the same place where the other object is ex:("the key is in the car"),hm at I don't remember :S

So, is my memory good or do I confused something? D:

Personally, i consider a correct order within a sentence to be the most important.
Subject - Verb - Object(order between different objects)

tbh some people overreact too much -or are just gramnazis-, the only thing that matters is delivering the thing you want to tell to the person you are talking nothing more.

Here's a kind of a tip that I discovered with was were (hope it's correct)
there was -> a single person/object
there were -> more than one person/object

ex:
there was one book on the table
there were two guys on the garden last week

Adverbs of frequency - Tip

You need to position them right, so it's like:

Subject - Adverb - Verb

Example:
I sometimes want to be a rockstar.

For Negative:

Subject - Auxiliary - Adverb - Verb

Example:
I don't often go to the cinema.

Interrogative:

How + often/frequently - Auxiliary - Subject - Verb

With what frequency - Auxiliary - Subject - Verb

Example:
How often do you go the market?
How frequently do you visit your grandparents?
With what frequency do you watch cartoons?

So what are these adverbs of frequency?
(In decreasing order of frequency)
Always / Frequently
Usually
Often
Sometimes
Rarely / Seldom
Hardly Ever
Never

All of these adverbs function normally except for Never.

Never is a negative adverb to begin with so there is no negative sentence because it's already one.

I never watch ... (There is no "I never don't watch")

The interrogative for Never is Ever. So:

Do you ever drink and drive?

I hope this will help!
