I am thinking that it will open up so many avenues for multiplayer-centric modding by giving players something to come back to, be it persistent world states, persistent inventories. It would open up the gates to things like a loot-drop system like in TF2 and CSGO, or an MMO-like leveling system for more ambitious projects. It also has the advantage of having a way for servers to be taken down and maintained without losing all of the persistent data.
The challenge I see here is finding a way to reasonably identify player identities for the purpose of recalling persistent data for that player and implementing it in a simple fashion.

I really want this in Zandronum, it saves us from the huge headache of having to use hacky workarounds like luk or encrypted clientside saving, and can really enhance gameplay.
You could achieve this with an account system but it is not exactly the same and comes with less baggage.

All the same, I would like to pipe up so that the devs know that this feature is desired, along with custom weapon bobs as Weapon parameters, and a more generic and parametrized variations of A_Weave since it's been in ZDoom for a while already. :P
