What do you want in a zombie game?

#1

Post by Conmon » Sun Jul 28, 2013 7:33 pm

So, it's been just over 3 years since I started the Non-Linear Open World Zombie Survival Project. It was too ambitious of a project, and I didn't get as much help as I would've liked (as far as like coding + sprites + mapping), but it was also my fault for not being organized at all with the mod.

I may finish NLOWZSP some day, but it's not likely. In between my other Doom projects, I'm going to be working on a new zombie mod (much more organized, and slightly less ambitious/more manageable). The single player will be very story-driven (based off a community story I was part of a few years back), with some elements of open world gameplay. The multiplayer, however, would have to be unique. So I just wanna ask you guys what you'd want to see from a new zombie mod. And I get that there's a ton of these floating around in the forums, but "don't make a zombie mod" isn't an acceptable answer

So, what do you guys think? I'd like some RPG elements - quests, leveling up, etc. Would it be co-op based? Hub levels? One giant level? What weapons?

Ah, that's another thing I was gonna mention.

I don't want to make an arcade-y, overpowered mod either.

The fire actor in zomb with over 9000 frames will kill your OpenGL on the start. Just remove it.

- No large levels.
- No memory leaks (remove actors when they are dead).
- No fucking fire.
- ??? ???
- PROFIT!

The game world is gonna be reasonably big, so would you recommend a hub system? That would kind of automatically make the multiplayer coop-based, since individual players could exit levels, and it would force the other players to enter the next map, too.

I've been away from Doom for a while, and I've heard of things like stats being saved online for RGA. Is there any way that players could be in different maps, and still communicate? I wouldn't think it was possible, but who knows.

You could try to make it so that if a certain number of people select that map, it will go there.

Dunno how it could be done, though.

If I remember correctly, Jumpmaze had something like that. It recorded the times of players that made it to the end, but once everyone was there the level could end.

EDIT: Maybe there could be like a queue sort of thing. Maybe that's not the right word, but it would be like co-op level selection in Warframe - it shows the player's name and the level they want to warp to (except in Doom it'd be like in the top left corner or something). I don't know how different choices would be managed, though. Like maybe if the choices are all different, a random level from the 4 (for example) would be selected.

So if like Entryway, Underhalls, Gauntlet, and Focus were selected, one of those 4 would be randomly chosen.

Focus on the maps, if the maps suck it isn't worth playing. Also headshots

That was for survival. If enough people finished under par, they would be able to exit. Otherwise, everyone dies.

EDIT: Damn ninjas.

Word.

I think limb-removal like in Dead Space would kick a lot of ass.

Like I said, I plan to have a single player mode with quests and leveling up and chapters and NPCs and all that jazz. It's going to be hub-based, so I'm trying to figure out if I want to do multiplayer the same way.

What about a co-op mode and a DM mode - the coop will have 4 player objectives and stuff, maybe randomized quests if it's possible; the DM will take place in fairly big maps with zombies roaming around - like maybe a last man standing game type taking place in various locales like warehouses, forests, etc.

Ideas?

Start working the basic ideas before there is too much ideas that the brighest idea becomes abandoning the project.. Can't think of a better idea :<

Creating something for a Zombie Apocalyptic event should be well detailed and offer a dark and horror atmosphere. To offer a suggestion for gameplay, players should start off with simple weapons and equipment to defend themselves with. Eventually, players will be able to possess much powerful weapons, with the addition of greater numbers of zombies.

NLOWZSP had the player start with a BB gun and a kitchen knife. I think that's a little cold blooded, but in my new project, you're in a survivor settlement with an economy and weapons that can be bought. You'll start off with whatever your small amount of money can buy (which will be a knife and a pistol).
