Is a pci fan a good idea?

#1

Post by Spottswoode » Mon Apr 22, 2013 3:51 pm

I just recently purchased an EVGA GeForce GT 610, installed it, and was amazed at my graphics....and my slow framerate. So I've decided to buy a 2.66ghz core2duo for my pc (as opposed to my current 3.4ghz pentium D) but it will probably be awhile before I have the money to throw at it. In the meantime, I'm considering overclocking my cpu to increase my framerate and I'm thinking of purchasing a pci fan to help keep my pc cool. My problem is that my motherboard only has pci (not express) slots on it. So is it a good idea to buy a pci slot fan or are pci fans just a bad idea in general?

The price to cooling power ratio is usually pretty bad.

You can get much better results with proper cable management and installing a 120mm fan or two. One to bring in cool air and one to efficiently "exhaust" the hot air which would accumulate in your case otherwise.

Overclocking your CPU in general would only help you with some games (CPU-intensive ones like World of Tanks and most older titles) and Pentium D processors are based on an architecture which is old and runs hot in general. The best idea to cool your CPU is to get a 3rd party CPU fan/heatsink combo.

I'm not expecting a huge increase in performance, 5-10 fps maybe. But I'm hoping it would be substantial enough to allow me to run most of my games in x16 antistropic filtering with ultra settings at about 25fps. (Playable to me.) I stand corrected about my pci slots, I have one x1 slot open and two pci slots.

you will NEVER get playable frame-rates with those settings on a nvidia GT610 as it is a budget entry level card and isn't intended for serious gaming to begin with. and no over-clocking wont get you anywhere either. it will do zandronum or minecraft fine thou but farcry 3, crysis 1/2/3? no and never. for any current gen HD game something like a GT640 or GTX650 would be sufficient (I don't have much experience with nvidia cards thou I know that the GTX650 is a good midrange card) also when buying graphics cards its best not to fall in the ddr3 trap, many card manufacturers use ddr3 on cheaper cards to lower the price, and sucker in not suspecting buyers thinking they bought a decent mid-range card but are bottlenecked by the ddr3 memory. there is a huge performance difference on DDR3 and GDDR5 cards.

I'm getting about 20 already.....it's a 2 gig. I was using a 1 gig GeForce 9500 GT. THAT couldn't even run 8x on ultra at 15 fps. I also bought the card because it was a cheap upgrade. I'm not building a top of the line system here. Even when I'm done with this desktop it won't get any better than 50 fps, even if it performs twice as well. And that would be awesome for me. :) edit: I should probably mention I run it at 720p. (1366 x 768) My previous statements could be misinterpreted to say it was going full 1080p. I think I may have confused a couple of you.

I must concede, however, gddr5 with the same memory capacity would outclass this so much. I'm just not willing to spend $350 on a graphics card for an aging machine.

If it's cpu you want to overclock I'd advise http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product ... ct_id=3053. Get like 1-2 120mm fans for your case. It might make a difference to what you want to do but also if you want to increase fps you might want to lower the res of the game being played like play it in windowed etc.

The fan bits will probably cost you around £30 - $45

to be fair any money spend on a old pentium D machine is thrown away money you just should have waited a bit, and build a complete new rig from scratch.

Lol. I'm eventually going to build a new machine, but it's going to be a couple of years before I have the kind of money I want to spend on it. Basically, I'm just stretching out what little is left of this one. A couple more years and it will be completely obselete, I know. Edit: I'll put it to you this way, I'm saving up some money to spend about $4000 USD on my next machine. So spending $300 to keep this somewhat current isn't all that much of a waste to me.

A nvidia gt610 isn´t the same performance as intel hd 3000 or 4000?

EDIT:If it was me, I would save money for buy a new computer with an i7 haswell with no extra gpu (if the videos are true, it should be the same performance of a nvidia gt630 or 650)

Is it integrated? (sarcasm.) I have a virulent hatred for intel's graphics department. (I'm jaded from the GMA 3000. *vomits and shudders*)

yes.
Hmm the gt610 is almost the same performance as the hd 4000 (and some cases slower than hd 4000)

EDIT: yes gma sucks >.<
but intel is now doing a well done work with gpus O_O

I will probably end up buying a machine with a decent integrated graphics chip, if only to help space out the time so I can buy a very good graphics card. I'm also interested in liquid cooling, but I keep hearing it's a massive pain to set up unless you do it from scratch and pick parts that work specifically with liquid cooling.

But like I said earlier, it's going to be a while (at least a year) before I'm going to be ready to buy another machine.

Damn thats a lot of cash

What kind of monster could you get with that? Is there any game you could not run with such a machine?

Youd only spend that ammount for a server stack really.

Or if your located in Australia where everything is expensive anyways.

Though with that money, hed be able to run crysis without his PC blowing up :)

Core i7-3770K 3.5Ghz, here is 547,94 dolars
On amazon I see a i7-3770K for 299 dolars.
I don´t think you can find a more expencive 3770K on Australia lol '-'

Well at least the integrated gpu wouldn´t sucks at the point to require a new one to play some new games

Ahem...currently: http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-DL-DVI-I ... phics+card , that's 10 percent right there.
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Phenom-Proces ... =Processor , that's another.

That's the kind of stuff I'm going to put in it. It'll probably be more like 2.7k than 4k but I'm going to have to buy a bunch of commercial software. So it may as well be 4k.

Also, I'm not planning on buying any next gen consoles, so this computer will need the capability for the next gen video format. Admittedly, it's probably overkill, but what the hell. I'd rather have a massively overpowered pc than the next smart phone anyway.

Be sure to get another motherboard aswell and a good Power Supply (if you don't have one).
And be sure that the motherboard supports AM3 and PCI Express (most of them support PCI Express).

AM3 is a AMD cpu socket, Im pretty sure the only thing they are talking about is intel cpu's.

The CPU I was looking at for my next comp was probably going to be an AMD processor, but my current socket is an LGA 775. (And the max my current motherboard can handle is a Core2Duo 2.66ghz.) I'm not sticking to specific hardware for my next machine at the moment.

On a much to the side note, I noticed that Fallout NV runs faster than Fallout 3 with the same settings. Weird.
