High resolution gaming (Multi monitor widescreen)

#1

Post by chokingvictim » Tue Jan 22, 2013 12:43 am

Greetings!
I'm glad to see that skulltag has been continued here to some extent, as I have heavily enjoyed playing multiplayer doom for years... but I have finally hit a wall I cannot figure out.

I just recently set up an eyefinity multi monitor setup on my pc.
3x 24 inch 1920x1080 monitors resulting in a final display of 5760x1080.

My question is, can you please enable a working set of resolutions reaching up to this point at some point in the next few updates?
I'm sure I am not the only one with this little hiccup :P
Thanks!

that's a pretty big resolution there. I do not know if it would be possible. But you should go to the bug tracker and post a feature request there :)

Will do :D.
I wasn't sure where a request post should be located.
This feature would be extremely useful - literally making it the "go to" port for anyone using multi-monitor gaming.
Side note, I think it was gzdoom that actually had an option to hit my resolution, but everything on view was flattened for the most part.
It didnt actually take the resolution and properly span three monitors while keeping everything in proportion.

FOV? I don't think your FOV was set correctly? That wide of a resolution surely unless your FOV is pretty high it's going to look... strange.
Also FOV is forced on (most?) servers.

I'm pretty sure most players will consider using 180-degree FOV monitor(s) cheating and that will never be implemented.

There is such a thing as "Cooperative" and it can easily be limited via server settings. Just because it doesn't fit in your ideal competitive scheme doesn't mean it can't be implemented. (backported?)

Maybe this will give you some perspective.
FOV commands wont help me, the hud and players hand are all scaled incorrectly and nothing is proportional.

Im stumped on how to fix this :/

That kind of left me speechless... how in the world?
Try running it in windowed, and line the boarder up with the edge of the screen so it LOOKS fullscreen. That would probably have more of the effect you want.

While this was a good suggestion, the game is already windows to full screen and the internal resolution is still off.
I'm using GZdoom for the screenshot *as it is the only port that has my resolution available* and im PRETTY SURE that it wont display as 16:9 and its ratio is stuck as 5:3 or something to that effect.
It's all I can think of that would make it pillarboxed and way out of perspective.

Basically, ZDoom only supports a fixed set of aspect ratios 4:3, 5:4, 16:10, 17:10, and 16:9. By default all resolutions are 4:3 unless they're close enough to one of the others. There's a way to force the aspect ratio to any of the others for animorphic support, but it won't help you much.

I suppose we could add support for horizontal triple head ratios fairly easily, but it does make me wonder what the long term solution is. As I stated early versions of Doom could use other heads to show 90 degrees to the left and right, so perhaps that should be emulated? For those with an even number of monitors having one head show the automap has been requested in the past as well.

If a resolution comes up for this via a patch or revision, please let me know!
Until then I suppose I will have to continue my brutal doom speed run video in normal resolutions.
I wanted to make a really nice widescreen rendered video as well, but it will have to wait :P

He, you got a cool setup over there. For the best configs, you better go to the source of Zandronum/Skulltag; Zdoom and GZdoom.

About Display settings:
http://zdoom.org/wiki/Display_options

About OpenGL Options:
http://zdoom.org/wiki/OpenGL_options

Considering your setup, GL will be essential for scaling and AA and HQ4X.

Edit:
Don't forget video mode:

Players can see far more at the same time and will see things other players could not, giving you an advantage. So if a guy sneaks up to you and shoots you, 99% of the players wouldn't see it coming. With 180° of vision a person would see anything thrown at them from pretty much any direction except directly behind. That would be considered cheating.

Most servers have their FOV locked to 90°, which would make those double/triple-monitor displays look stretched, bizarre, and awful, defeating the purpose of implementing the modes in the first place. However, if they did allow these super-widescreen FOVs, those players enjoy have a strong advantage over others. Whether they should or shouldn't is another debate.

2/10 made me reply.
