When was it? Perhaps it was thanks to the hardcore duelists who have moved on to Odamex.

Regardless of whether it is #1 or not, it is obviously a popular map nowadays, and removing it would make quite a few people unpleased.
Also people abandoning ST to Odamex is news for me (Not trying to demean Odamex in any way, btw)

Seeing this thread I figured it's time to run another evaluation of map popularity within the wad. It may help in deciding which maps should be removed.
It's been a while since duel32a was released, the total number of map picks on Grandvoid servers reached over 9000 (literally) since the installment of duel32a on January 9th, so here are the results.

Will it include the latest version of Fae_duel?

If it does not get removed (which I personally doubt it will unless 20-million people tell me it's awful), I'll make sure it's the latest version.

Here are my current thoughts:

Definitely Remove:
  • 32in24 10 map26 - The layout is interesting, but people don't like it that much and there really should have been a second SSG on the map.
  • Aurora - People still hate the map, so whatever
  • Brit10 map02 - The map is really tiny, it has a mediocre completion rate, people don't like it, and there are enough brit maps as it is.
  • UDM3 map03 - Meh. This is really more of a FFA map than a duel map, and even though it's somewhat playable I think there are better alternatives.
Maybe Remove:
  • Styx8 - This isn't really a duel map either, but it has a reasonable pick-to-complete ratio, so I'm hesitant to remove it.
Definitely add:
  • Exposed - This map was actually in an early Duel32 release, but came up again during the MAC. There was nothing really wrong with it, so why not add it back.
  • GothicDM MAP02 - Been suggested by multiple people. If you liked foxtrot's tight movement requirements, you'll probably like this map.
Add possibilities:
  • DWANGO5 map02 - The only map from ZDDL that Duel32 doesn't already have.
  • Hipafrag - A classic map from an old version of Duel32, various people have asked for it to return.
  • King2 - It exists! Will it catch on? Who knows...but it's not a terrible map so maybe.
  • Nyssy - A Doom 1 map? Why not.
  • I am still convinced that there is room for a Titan map in the pack. People obviously weren't fans of Aurora, but Foxtrot had a number of players who enjoyed it. This thread has a pack with every map titan has ever released all in one, might be worth a look through.
    • I've had recommendations for MAP11 and MAP12 thus far.
Also, I think I'll ditch Duel16 as well. We only need one SSG training map.

Oh, and Boo/D6M1 are here to stay. Both of those are considered duel classics.

MAP01 - Just now suggested by Hex, but I saw a demo of it and it looked pretty decent. Only one SSG though, but it seems less campable than the 32in24 10 one. I like this one.

Dwango5map02 is not a map I would actually consider implementing. It is extremely crowded with almost no room for movement, and I don't think it will be played much.
Besides, I don't recall seeing it being played in ZDDL servers.
Exodus1on1 is something I'd like to see back, along with exposed and probably hipafrag.

A shot of the map selector redesign in progress:

Yay 3D floors! And yes, I'm going to mirror it four ways when I'm done.

Maybe it's me, but the BFG seems almost a little bit too ridiculous in Exodus1on1. I'm hesitant to make it UV skill too, since I generally prefer not to force dmflags or skill levels, or anything of the sort so I can leave it up to the server admins what settings a server has.

RE: The Duel40 (!) Thread

Post by AlexMax » Sat Sep 22, 2012 10:09 pm

So yeah, during the redesign of the map, I figured out how to squeeze and extra 2 maps out per quarter-of-the-map, so I can now safely announce that Duel32 is now...Duel40! For real!

However, I still need your guys help. Between this thread and the altdeath thread there have been tons of suggestions, both for this edition and editions past. Map suggestions are great, but it would be even better if you could go through some of the older suggestions and actually give them a try...who knows, you might end up liking them. And if you don't like some suggested maps, say so...when people just suggest maps and plead with me not to remove their favorite map without vetting other peoples suggestions, we ended up with the slightly controversial map picks for Duel32a.

Oh, and there's also a list of maps from older versions of the Duel32 compilation in the altdeath thread. See an old favorite you'd like to have back? Say so!

I have no maps, old or new, that I'd like to suggest be deleted, and the only maps I'd like to see added would be my own (Snowday, which I had asked be added a long white back but never received a response), and Hipafrag.

If we're suggesting maps for the future. I think cybercrime3 map01 could be an interesting map. Because the BFG is weak, unless you know how to use it, array of weapons and carefully laid out. No places to hid and camp.

Just to throw in a few additional map suggestions, I recently discovered a handful of Deathmatch WADs circa 1996 made by various members of the Japanese Doom community (I had no idea it existed either, heh)

Most of them are generic mid 90s fare, but I found a few on an archive of Jason Yasuko's site (aka the king1.wad guy) which actually seem like pretty solid 1v1 maps:

doomsday map01 (demo here)
gorudas1 (demo here)
goruzig3 (demo included), probably my favorite of the three

Also if you're like me and you like d5m2/danzig11 but hate the crampedness of it, I just remembered that british9 map04 is basically just a rework of danzig11 that spaces it out a bit and makes it easier to maneuver and whatnot. I have no idea how it plays compared to the original, but there it is, Van Halen midi and all.
