Ransu's Remastered Game Music

#1

Post by Ransu » Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:08 am

New Doom 25th anniversary music remaster released! https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... NxnGiXLKGm

Most recent updates:
Strife's music has been updated for the Steam version! 12/14/2014
Heretic's music has been updated for the game's 20th anniversary! 12/23/2014
The final version of Hexen's music is now released! 7/17/2015

Info

This is a project that I've been working on for a pretty long time. I always wanted to do my own music project with Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen, and other soundtracks. The songs have been given a more modernized sound to them using high quality samples and plugins. The program used to make this all possible is FL Studio and I've been using it for some years, but I'm not a professional music person. This is just the work of a dedicated fan. The music files are in MP3 and OGG format.

Current works in progress

Duke Nukem 3D
Hexen II
Rise of the Triad
Wolfenstein 3D

Information and Known Issues
-The WAD files no longer use a MAPINFO lump because of people having problems with it before. This means that the WAD files will be larger in size so I hope everyone has the patience and the hard drive space for downloading them.

-As of the time it was tested, Zandronum may crash at the start of some maps in the games when playing with the WAD files. It's not clear what causes the crashes, but other source ports such as GZDoom work with the WAD files perfectly fine.

How to use(for Doom engine games)

Use the autoload feature in the ini file. Other source ports such as ZDoom and GZDoom have the same autoload feature as well. You may also simply drag and drop the WAD file on the source port's executable file.

Other stuff

Perkristian's high resolution sound pack for use with Doom games(Recommended): http://abbs.jbserver.com/downloads/soun ... om_sfx.exe - Note: It is an exe file, but a wad file is extracted from it.

Risen3D

The Doom soundtracks are also being hosted at the Risen3D site: http://risen3d.drdteam.org/

Problems or suggestions?

These songs are practically delicious in every way. What you've done for Heretic and HeXen are especially better than anything Sycraft did.

Any chance you plan on tackling Chex Quest sometime?

I'm currently concentrating on Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, Heretic, and Hexen right now. It's a lot of work and I have been thinking about doing Strife and other games, but I want to finish everything else first.

This is very good. Gives a fresh touch to the music which was slowly becoming annoying (at least for me).

Previews are not always final versions so it may or may not change. I'm trying to do the best I can with the samples I have and the things I know.

I don't really like your remastered Blood musics, they sound annoying to me, I don't know why, could be that weird buzz in the background or the quality of the way the instruments are used, I don't know.

For the doom ones, not bad actually.

Glad you made Heretic/Hexen ones too. Seems most everyone else only cares about mixing up Doom's yet again. :P

It helps that you did a great job.

A few issues with the Heretic pack, though:
  • Choir seems too overpowering in some of these. (E1M3, E1M7)
  • E1M6 could use a bit more emphasis on the "synth brass".
  • In a few (like E2M9) the reverb gets kinda cacophanous. :/
  • In E1M5, the main instruments sound way too quiet. It's like the note events are too short, this seems to happen to any MIDI rendition. (Sounds fine in classic Adlib though.)
  • Is that a guitar on E1M7's Timpani track? I hope that was a mistake. D:
  • E1M9's guitar could use some toning down, it's a bit earsplitting at the moment.
  • E2M6 seems barely audible until 2/3rds in.
From what I can tell, Hexen's is not plagued by any of the volume oddities. The official CD music should've been like this. ;)

Yes I'm aware of the issues. The reason why Hexen sounds so much better is because I added a new plugin which enhances everything overall. I'm currently working on putting the plugin into the rest of the soundtracks. By the way, Heretic's E1M7 song does have a distortion guitar track. Just look at this screenshot of the MIDI opened in FL Studio with the tracks named according to the instruments they use.

I somehow never noticed the guitar track much, possibly because of the short note problem seen elsewhere. (Although it's not very loud in OPL either. Hmm.)

But, might sound better once you throw it at the new plugin setup. (I look forward to the results of that, overall.) ;)

Work may seem slow, but it's because I'm trying out a lot of things to improve the music. One neat idea I had was to make two separate versions of Heretic's soundtrack: one that sounds like the original and one that replaces all the synth strings with real string samples. Just check out the example below.

Heretic E2M1 Original Version: http://www.mediafire.com/?9cja48dsz2arylg

Heretic E2M1 Real Strings Version: http://www.mediafire.com/?0ouvn60ghgea8zn

Personally, I like the original you have there a bit better. The real string samples worked better for the HeXen soundtrack imo.

It's good that you'll be releasing two versions though, as others will probably feel the opposite. It's good to know that effort towards completion is still being made!

Hmm, I have to agree. While I'm not opposed to real strings, I think the songs lose something without that touch of synth.

But if it's not too much trouble, go ahead and make both versions. Choice is good. :)
