No trick? Well, reading left to right and top to bottom, I'll answer D. Wondering if there's something else to this though

All of them are correct since they're all inside a shaded box.

Nope. There's only one correct answer (though I understand from a prospective thing)

It depends on how you define the coordinate system. The shaded square is on the top left, but you haven't defined what the numbers mean. No matter what I answer, you can state a different definition of the coordinate system to make my answer wrong, so it is indeed a trick question.

Top, upper, lower and bottom are horizontal axes and left, middle and right are vertical axes. Judging by the alternatives, each of these axes starts at number 1. The horizontal axes only have 3 boxes each, which eliminates option A's "4 Top" description.
Regardless of which box you consider to be the starting point of each axis, the shaded box is not positioned in "3 Left" in either orientation, which eliminates options B and C. It would have to be either "1 Left" or "4 Left", and option D follows the former. Its "1 Top" also makes sense as it is the first box from left to right in the Top axis.

For anyone who still gives a shit about this because I absolutely forgot.
Here's the answer.
Everyone who didn't put A is wrong.

What an absolutely arbitrary method of determination, Empyre was the only one with the correct answer, test fails itself

Except it isn't a trick question. The question itself was pulled from an aptitude practice test. I don't agree with it myself, but that's essentially the answer. I agree though and think that's absolute shit.
