"ARCHIE" [Release 1]

HOWDY.

ARCHIE is a high-surrealism modern doom wad with an equally high system requirement. It tells a story about hipsters using technology to create a singularity timesink from which they can never escape, on purpose, and how they affect those around them with something that isn't real. Words words words, muh level design, muh different shit, remember that really old stuff, etc etc, quid pro quo, yadda yadda yadda, environments. Point and click games suck.

HOW TO PLAY

Choose "LEVEL CHOOSER" and follow the white line directly to your left. This way you can play it from start to finish.

LEVEL CHOOSER exists so that you can:
-Skip to any map if there is a bug not yet fixed that is preventing you from going on
-Make skipping to any map easier since using map warp cheats will not work

------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -------------

ENGINE SUPPORT

Zandronum 1.2*, Zandronum 1.3, fully tested.
GZDooM 1.8.02, fully tested.

IWADs Supported: For DOOM2.WAD, would probably work with freedoom or final doom but it has not been tested.

------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -------------

DEVELOPMENTAL ENGINE BUILDS ARE NOT SUPPORTED AND WILL BREAK EVERYTHING.

>What is a developmental build?
gzdoom above 1.8.02, or Zandronum 1.3-alpha*, Zandronum 2.0*, etc. You can get this information as the engine is starting up in the small text window, or by opening the console with ~ and scrolling up with PAGE UP.

I understand that development builds are very popular with zdoom and this forum because of legitimate actual use for new features. Unfortunately developmental builds break absolutely everything in this wad. If you guys can pick a specific build, I will make this wad work with it.

LICENSE
This project is released under an anti-hipster license which I just made up which states the following:
1. You must play through, or at the very least, watch someone else play, a part before pretending to hate on it.
2. You can edit and mod this project for free and do whatever you want as long as you link to either this or the zand thread.
3. You may not pretend to be me.

------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -------------

HOW TO SUBMIT A BUG

1. What non-development build version you are using.
2. What map you were on (press tab and copy the white name)
3. What you were doing when it happened, as best as you can remember.
4. Screen Resolution
5. Computer specs including video card and processor
6. What choice of CPULIMIT you picked.
7. Post all of the above in this thread.

If you do not post your engine version I am going to assume that you are using a developmental build.
Howdy. I've been experimenting with some camera effects and other things and would like some input on what I have done so far. This is for a wad with some very dark, david lynch surrealist (not your watered down cartoon surrealsim!), borderline-absurdism things in it. It's for Zandronum / GZDooM and will have a high (first gen i5 or i7) system requirement.

This forum is for zandronum, the point of which is to have OpenGL, so I'm assuming that this sort of thing will be more appreciated. With that having been said, you probably don't want to watch any of these if you consider yourself a "doom purist" - you have been warned.

There are a few videos I would like to showoff today. Please do not murder me for the old videos with the bandicam logo, I have since parted ways with it.

1. Dream Demo (fake roll, fake blur)
Bit of lag at about a minute in due to the massive amount of stuff going on but the rest of the video is fine and shows what I want.

The tag is deprecated, please use the tag

2. Psuedo-360 FOV using cameras
Sorry for obnoxious sound effects, but it gets the point across.
phpBB
The tag is deprecated, please use the tag

3. "Color singularity"
phpBB

4. extreme dynamic texture
Note: You really have to view this in 1080p to see anything.

thanks for any input
Nicely done. I had no idea you could do something like this. I am wondering if you're going to allow other people to use some of these effects in their mods? There can be some rather interesting applications of these effects.

Thank you. Yes, once I release this wad I will be providing a full technical documentation for it, basically a step by step on how you can do this yourself. Also, the ACS source will be provided.

Well as a big Lynch fan and having always been slightly let down by other "surreal" mods (although I do admire the vision of void) I greatly anticipate this, the videos do look good.

sadly we'll never see lynch ever make a video game in our lifetime. the closest we'll ever come to it are those commercials for the ps2 he did, but they had about as little as much to do with actual videogames as possible

You could argue some Dune games are based on his film.
Could you reveal any information about your mod?

as a lynch fan, you should be used to hearing "I won't explain it but I insist it has a meaning". :P Except that is one thing I can't stand about this sort of thing, so I won't leave you with nothing. Again, being here was mostly about the videos and to see reactions to the style, so. When the wad is released, there will be a separate document with it that explains it all, and reading it is optional.

.
without saying too much, since it's easily due for release in early november, it's about a story having to do with a very deep psychological theme rooted in having a bad mentality about everything and that affecting your existence. it's dripping wet with symbolism and metaphors. I also like very much to touch on dreams, and go a little crazy at times, and even go into straight up absurdism territory. there's another map in this wad already made that is so out there it makes the dream demo look like a cartoony joke. there will still be gameplay, sometimes it is separate from the story but related to it in some way, and other times (like in dream demo) they are merged. And I don't mean some different type of gameplay, I mean regular (albeit enhanced with modern source port floors/effects/etc) doom style shooting levels. I mean, if I left those out, it would just be boring!
So I actually played this for a bit and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

My brain hurts. A lot.

If making people's minds explode/implode was part of your goal, then amazing job - I really don't know what to say, aside from "My brain hurts", given that sums up, oh, everything that I played through.

If that was your goal, then really, really, really nice work.

Otherwise, I don't know what your mind is like right now but you might wanna reorganize your thoughts.

It's a great abstract piece of work and we need more games like it!

It was kind of interesting but I had to quit due to single digit FPS in some areas, I've got a core i7 from 2012, I guess it's not quite enough for this.

I got i5 2500k 3.6 ghz (I think) with 8 gb ram and it worked perfectly.

Nice wad and trailer, but I must know if it is compatible with brutal doom

I've got 8G too; this is a laptop, though. It has integrated graphics + an nvidia GPU.

Ironically this is the first game I haven't been able to play on it, it's more demanding than HL2, Dead space 3, TF2, and anything else that I bought on steam (I've been so busy I don't even remember the newer games I've played recently)

The problem is that there are many times where there will be too many monsters. The weapons are supposed to be (very) fast to give you a chance against that, and it would also drive the system requirement through the roof further than it already is since it would have all of those extra effects on each one. But there is nothing specifically that would prevent you from playing the wad while using it as long as it doesn't take away the special guns.
jwaffe wrote:

Can you say where this started happening? I'm curious. I think something is awry here because the wad was developed on an i5 with 8GB of ram and a 660 Ti, it shouldn't lag on this.

>nvidia optimus
I have a T520 myself and sometimes games report the intel video card as the primary, with no option to switch. Nvidia says that optimus makes that link seamless and it doesn't matter, but I would try disabling optimus and forcing dedicated in the bios.

>laptop
I've also had laptops that claimed that they had a "full power mode" but really would simply not be the same as being plugged in.

Failing that, try choosing C2D level in the cpulimit hall. Failing that, try gzdoom. You probably already know all of this, I'm just curious as to where it's happening.

the dream journal is some absurd stuff for the sake of having absurd stuff but some of that were test rooms to test out scripts to see if something could be done, I left it all in there and that was just a little joke

The RC car level / map7end2 / blue gloomy area had the player start in the wrong place from testing another area out. This has been changed in a new link. If you don't want to re-download, when that map starts use idclip to go all the way to the west most part of the map. You should see the RC car and a voodoo doll marine of yourself, that was where you were supposed to start. insert snarky comment about bugs here

This reminds me of the ending of Bioshock Infinite. It's thought-provoking madness. I like where this wad has gone and what it does. It's pretty nice.
