HL1 simply had motionless objects fall to the ground while HL2 had physics written all over it.
His role might be 'Survivor' to express that he, a physicist, transformed himself into a super-soldier during the game, scavenging experimental and alien weapons and using his wits and environments to survive a cluster of aliens and highly-trained squads of soldiers through a vast science complex and alien homeworld, doing what's necessary to survive.
It'd work, and I'd love to see it, but as an addon class rather than being included in the main package.
Specialties could revolve around the HEV suit and his versatility: even a small bit of suit energy makes a good difference in his defense, he can have some natural resistance to poison damage and damage sectors like nukage, and he has a wide variety of weapons that makes him good at everything but great at nothing. Basically, he becomes a jack-of-all-trades.
His defense would be decent, his speed would be relatively low unless sprinting (which runs off of the HEV's recharging aux power meter), he has weapons that fill all roles decently but he can't carry as much ammo as the others (plus will be reloading more), and he has some specialty equipment like the jump booster and gravity gun (which could be used to grab weapons/ammo, items, and toss explosive barrels or even weaker enemies around). Hell, if you really think he needs it, he could get a location damage system... though I don't think that can be implemented without editing monsters directly (Can't just scan for where on the sprite's bounding box a puff hit, right?)
The biggest problem is that his unique features would all probably be a bitch to code in, and balancing him so that he's not
too good at everything so as to overshadow specialized roles could prove difficut. After all:
- He can't outdo Doomguy or Parias in sheer burst damage
- He can't out-tank Chexguy and his insane defense
- He can't be as well-stocked as Corvus (though the Tome of Power alone makes elf boy here quite special)
- He can't be 100% accurate with everything like BJ (only certain weapons of Gordon's can be that accurate, and they're either naturally slow or must be fired slow like the 9mm pistol)
- Can't demolish crowd as well as Duke, nor have anything as mobile as the Jetpack (which tends to be banned anyway)
- Can't constantly vomit bullets from every weapon like Security Officer (who is probably the closest to Freeman out of all the others)
- And of course can't have the artillery or rocket jumping prowess of Ranger (nor the Quad Damage, but that's not going to happen anyway)
And that's not even counting Prisoner 849, whose role/specialization isn't known yet.
