Neewbie wrote: a cool feature would be weather and day/night cycle with nice skybox that would be awesom
Yeah different times of day is definitely a concept we'll look into, although cycling through them in 'real time' wouldn't happen. We'd have day maps and night maps, separately. In the night, hunting would be a different experience that involves torch lighting like in Minecraft, and the animals would behave differently.
Strych6 wrote: very neat idea. The taxidermy'd hell baron is a touch of brilliance.
It's not the official logo or anything. I made it as a placeholder for the time being.
Strych6 wrote: If theres a terrain dispute, http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=6200 . Good luck though I could never, for the life of me find out how to use that thing.
I had actually found that prior to this thread, but it seems way too fragile and I wouldn't be able to figure out how to use it either.
Don't worry, W1D3A55 has been sculpting the terrain for this map manually. It's quite impressive.
Strych6 wrote: of course I don't know much about the gameplay, and at this point Im just daydreamin: It'd be neat if it was a survival wad, literally. Perhaps you're in a tribe, and some tribes will periodically try and kill food on your territory or raid your armories, granaries etc. Maybe some tribes will pay you for mercenary services. It'd be neat if there was no currency either, just some bartering/gifting oppurtunities. But I know this is a lot of work :P
Our daydreams are somewhat mutual. I envisioned a currency/trade system too, but that wouldn't be until a later version because it's apparently too much of an advanced thing to implement. I've seen it done before quite a few times though.
As for the 'tribes', are you talking about multiplayer? If not, the AI for the tribes would have to be superbly coded. Creative ideas nonetheless
Flynn_Taggart95 wrote: Your mod looks like it would be great to romp around online (maybe even see who can score the most in a hunting competition).
Yep, just like many fishing games, there will be a competitive mode. A goal would be set, like to hunt down a specific species given a minimum size. One gameplay catch is that the hunted animal has to be carried back to your base in order to be weighed, and the best hunts tend to be the furthest away.
Watermelon wrote: This is a pretty cool idea. I like the atmosphere; looking forward to the final version if it's not out yet

If you need ACS/decorate help, I can assist a small bit.
Final version is far from being out yet, and I do realize I'd started this thread too early.
There's a wad link in the original post that's frequently updated, although currently still in its very early stages.

We definitely need some DECORATE assistance for the animals themselves. If you'd like to help, please PM me and I'll explain the situation. That would be appreciated

Thanks for your suggestions, fellows!

Multiplayer would be quite the pipe dream, though a damn good one!
But I was thinking moreso directed monsters. I dont know much about coding but in the Stronghold mod there were instances of monsters following a trail. Perhaps imitate the stealing of goods with the appropriate ACS triggers (timer, monster walks over, etc ) lol go the extra mile and let monsters powerup+heal when eating your stash

to go on and on about more features that take too much work to complete...
I favor the idea of species dominating other species-which makes you want to keep the predator population down befor they steal your meals. But not down too far, as the predator species could end up snatching away your mutual enemies for their own meal-possibly saving you from a tricky situation

Species would multiply based on how many paired genders, so more meat if you let some of the herd live. Maybe even some could domesticate and help you hunt and retrieve far off trophies

Would be intensive labor but the math seems simple. The weather cycle seems overboard and cosmetic unless you want it to effect gameplay. Having it dictate the growth patterns of species could come useful, for example.

idk just venting, 'love the atmosphere of those screens

As much as I admire your very elaborate ideas, might I remind you that this will be a 'fun' hunting game and not an ecologically realistic simulation.

We're still keeping this a 'trophy hunting' theme rather than meat gathering for survival. So it's casual. Technically it's a sports game.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I imagine your version of the concept would be fun to play. To me it all just seems too intimidating, but who knows what will come out of this mod in the future.

This looks like fun! I'm surprised something like this hasn't been made earlier! (There probably was, but I doubt it looks good as this.)

Massive thanks to Worrior for ripping some deer (and boar) sprites from the game 'Redneck Deer Huntin', which look something like this:
Image

Was anyone else even aware of that game's existence?

Currently the animals are being worked on, and it occurred to me that this mod will need a title.
Any suggestions? Maybe a name that nods to Doom in the form of a pun, or whatever. It seems like all hunting games are incapable of having non-generic names.

By Torch do you mean Flashlight or a Torch? Also if you actually mean a torch why not use flares or do you want a hand held weapon which I would again say Flashlight would be preferable... Dont be Doom 3 put the flashlight on the gun.

Here's how the buck will look in-game

Its AI is still being developed.[/spoiler]

GL lights/shadows are really buggy especially when it comes to slopes. The shadow of a tree would be cut off if it meets the edge of a slope. With monsters, their shadows flicker when on a slope. I can sense you'll want me to get rid of GL shadows altogether, but that makes the map and trees look even more terrible. I think we'll just be grateful for GL lighting despite its bugs because it's better than nothing.

Ah, thanks! We'll be needing that.

Sorry this project's been on hold recently, I'll try to get it rolling again. The animal AI is a real pain. Everything else should be doable.
