DUELPACK: A cross-compatible duel compilation!

Hey there, fellow Doomers. This is a pack of 32 classic Duel maps, containing all the competitive classics, as well as a few excellent maps that are slightly more obscure. This pack functions very similarly to Duel40: Map00 is your lobby and you call a vote from there. For those interested, this wad is 100% vanilla compatible and the lobby works in the 3 main c/s ports.

The maps featured are as follows:

MAP01 "entryway" by Sandy Petersen
MAP02 "ssl2" by Erkka Ryynänen
MAP03 "judas23_" by Strangenl
MAP04 "danzig1 map11" by B. Vannatta (d5m2)
MAP05 "dwango5 map01" by Rockt and Asmo
MAP06 "dwango6 map01" by Usurper
MAP07 "dwango5 map07" edit of "Dead Simple" by Sandy Petersen and American McGee
MAP08 "pobla8" by Denis Moeller
MAP09 "oblivx" by Bloodlust
MAP10 "brit10 map01" by Danny Lancashire
MAP11 "dweller2 map11" by Dweller in the Cellar
MAP12 "dwango12 map12" by Floss
MAP13 "dk_dm_13 map01" by Doomkid
MAP14 "fuloser" by Fuloser
MAP15 "king1" by by Jason Yasuko
MAP16 "greenwar map16" by Hellbent (Jason Root)
MAP17 "dwango20 map03" by The Prophet
MAP18 "kid_duel map01" by Doomkid
MAP19 "danzig2 map19" by B. Vannatta
MAP20 "greenwar map20" by Hellbent (Jason Root)
MAP21 "thehook.wad" by Spam
MAP22 "dmc2 map03" by Andrei Romanov
MAP23 "dwango6 map23" Bfw900 Map06 (Unknown Author)
MAP24 "moo2d" by Toke
MAP25 "bahdko1" by Bahdko
MAP26 "kid_duel map04" by Doomkid
MAP27 "dwango20 map32" by Traversd
MAP28 "dweller2 map02" by Dweller in the Cellar
MAP29 "swarmdmx map04" by Jason Yasuko
MAP30 "mancerx map14" by Mancer (C. Savage)
MAP31 "theden.wad" by Spam
MAP32 "bacardi1" by Lordunum (Samuel Lock)

Code: Select all

Q: Why isn't MAPXX included in this wad? I love that map, why the hell didn't you include it?

A: I can't include everything under the sun, but anyone can compile wads assuming permission is given!
Enjoy! Hopefully server hosts will get some use from this.

thanks for the good download button

edit: why is this just a copy of duel40? zdaemon has zddl/jacobs ladder and odamex supports loading 32 wads so I don't see a need or even an audience for a new pack... not even a big selection of new maps or anything

Honestly just because ladder is too big, ZDDL is too small, and its nice to have a lobby in Oda, and also because this will run in dosbox. Also duel40 is missing dwango6map01 which hurts me on a deep level

Also duel40 changes periodically, whereas I intend this to be a one-time release

How dare you.

...just kidding. :P

I actually am really quite curious as to your selection criteria, however. You mentioned that you wanted D6M1 in your pack, which I can totally empathize with - I've never been totally happy with removing old classic maps that simply happen to be out of fashion these days, but what about the rest?

Firstly I just want to say, I absolutely don't intend this to replace duel40/jacobs ladder/zddl etc, but rather to compliment them  The first half of the pack is roughly the expected lineup of duel turf that we're all familiar with, but upon playing some less common maps against a variety of players, I've come across quite a few I found to be fantastic for duels and thought they could really use some more exposure. Some of these were once popular but have fallen by the wayside, others were simply hidden gems:

dwango12 map12
dwango20 map03
danzig2 map19
thehook.wad
dmc2 map03
dwango6 map23
bahdko1
dwango20 map32 (aka Afterlife)
swarmdmx map04
theden.wad
bacardi1

There's also kid_duel map04 which I made so it's hard to be objective about, but I find it to be the best of the entire kid_duel pack, looking back. The maps I listed above though, I would love to see some of them used in tournaments, and I might even get around to hosting one myself if time permits. It's on the to-do list!

Right, but what I wanted to know was what makes a map "fantastic for duel" in your opinion? What is your criteria? Do they have specific properties? Or is it something less concrete, something like "Did I have fun playing this map Y/N"? I've actually had several of these maps in past duel## packs, or at least considered them, but always dropped them due to player feedback.

Now I get what you mean - There isn't a specific criteria as such other than vanilla compatibility, but it's definitely dependent on fun. Each of these maps really made me think to defeat opponents and they all seemed to test varying aspects of a Doomer's skill. They also play at various speeds, I find most players tend to love "full on frag" style maps bar Entryway, but a few of these definitely require you to slow down a bit and try to really read the other player, namely dwango20 map03, dwango6 map23, bahdko1 and swarm map04. None of them had weapon placement that struck me as frustrating, very few times you'll spawn into bullshit frags, from my findings anyway. They all are relatively easy to navigate while having great BFG cover points as well, knowledge of how it works will seriously benefit players. Hopefully people are willing to try the not-so-common stuff out and leave their thoughts on them!
