Straight to Hell - Single level PWAD for Doom 2

#1

Hello guys, I'm back and I got a WAD for you to play!

I intended this WAD to be a complete modern story based add-on for Doom 2, but since my spare time got shorter and shorter the design got to a halt. The whole idea behind this was to give more of a background on the marine VS hell scenario, without foiling the gameplay. The way I did this is by making the player able to "listen" to what static NPC marines have to say by running into them (essentially a simple onscreen print message).

This WAD does have a few jumping (and crouching) parts, so its not an oldschool WAD where jumping would be considered cheating.

What this WAD includes:
- OpenGL lights
- Coloured sector lights
- 3D floors
- Slopes (lots of them!)
- Custom music (two songs, composed by myself and TheMetal4all)
- Custom title cards

(yeah I know its lame to have custom titlecards for a single level, but I had already made it so I thought I should at least include it).

Right now I'm going to get very busy with school, so for me this is the perfect time to release it.

Even though I don't have time to work on a full mega-WAD in this style, I do hope that this at least somewhat inspires people.

Let me know what you think of it, critisism, anything! :D

This door breaks:

It opens once, but then when it closes, the door sector suddenly has a negative height (it looks like -8 mapunits) and it can't be opened again.

Whoops, I must have left that in by accident. Will fix that in the next version, you should just crouch underneath it untill then. :)

No, you can't crouch underneath it. Because the door doesn't even open. A sector with negative height means that the ceiling is somehow below the floor. Example: a ceiling height of 0 and a floor height of 16.

The way that doors work is that the ceiling stops moving as soon as its height is equal to that of the floor height (and the door is then considered "closed"). However, if you have a sector with negative height, the ceiling will rise until it reaches the floor height, and then it will stop moving. The door is then permanently "stuck".

Huh? Thats the first time I heard of that? The door starts on a semi-closed position, so you can crawl underneath it. Thats what I meant.

What do you guys think of the two MIDI tracks? I composed the first track, and a friend made the other.

I've played it and it's okay. A good thing is that there are enough weapons and ammo to deal with all the baddies without prolonging stuff artificially. I hate maps that give you only shotgun and chaingun and send hordes of barons at you (because it's "difficult"). This map doesn't do that.

List of bad things:
  • Too easy.
  • Two blue armors one just right after another. One green armor would suffice, or even no armor at all.
  • A door getting stuck.
  • A stuck zombieman.
  • It seems that more time was spent on getting all the slopes right instead of on the map itself. Slopes are unnecessary.
  • Too straight-forward.
  • Instant death traps.
  • The marines talking like nothing is happening with monsters right next to them - that's just stupid.
I give the map 2 out of 5 stars.

Thanks for the little review. :)

When I get some free time, I would like to try and make a multiplayer map.

"This sorta situation gettin' kinda bad." "Kinda bad? This here's horrible we're gonna DIE!" "Yeah but I ain't worried." "How is you ain't worried?" "'Cus you can smack 'em all with yo dang-a-lang." "Oh snap, you're right." *whips out BFG*
I'm in game as CubedSoul.
Also we need a BFG similar to beta Doom, other words a Christmas gun.
