ZandroGuy Skin v2.0 [08/18/17 Update]

It's been a while. I decided to revisit my old work and finally add those details and polish I'd been meaning to add for so long. ZandroGuy is now complete with Z-shaped cracks, metallic sheen, full sprite rotations, actually decent firing frames, and a mugshot to boot!

What's changed since v1.4…
  • Sprites greatly improved! Added the signature 'Z' cracks to the helmet (with full rotations!).
  • Mugshots added! Unlike Doomguy, ZandroGuy wears a helmet inside his helmet.
  • Converted sounds to .ogg! Filesize is now less than half what it was in v1.4.
  · Made the firing frames prettier.
  · Added a new wimpy death sound.
  · Moved *surface sound back to *gasp.
  · Rebuilt the gib sound using the source components, with additional effects.
  · Recolored the blood a bit for the gib frames. Edited out the odd grow on the last frame.

Note: This skin is also included in the ZandroSkins community skin pack. That version is outdated, however. To avoid conflicting sprites and SNDINFO, remove either the skin you downloaded here, or edit ZandroSkins to remove the ZandroGuy skin folder. Or wait until ZandroSkins updates, I guess.

According to the Zdoom Wiki, *crazydeath will play *xdeath if no sound is specified. Why a crazy death displays the normal death animation, then, is beyond me.

*Crazydeath will now play the regular death sound. Also, new sounds for wimpy deaths:

You clearly didn't read the rest of the wiki page! :P

Wimpy Death: Death blow dealt less than 10 damage.
Death: Death blow dealt over 10 damage, player health did not reach -50
Crazy Death: Player health reached -50
Gib Death: Player health reached -100

Wow nice!
I don't know if it's intended or not but while in the skin selection menu I can see my personal colour applied on the green parts of the sprite, while playing it's overrided by the default green.

Ah, of course, the player only gibs if his health is -100 or lower… My question should have been, then: Why does *xdeath play for crazy deaths? Something else I'm missing here?

EDIT: Also, I was aware of those damage values, but that wiki page has them all in different places, so I had taken *crazydeath out of context, completely forgetting what even causes a gib death. Thanks for putting them in order for me. :)

It's just a poorly chosen fallback. Doom has a crazydeath scream by default anyway.

Very cool idea! Alternate versions could have more cyan/purple-ish eyes, and/or pants, as well as either a blood crack or a crack with a glow of the player's color.

Here's the colors that I've used for the Zan "helmet guy" so far:

Variations would be neat, thanks for the palette. I haven't really touched this lately, but I do want to add cracks and/or blood stains eventually.


In other news, I'm considering removing the wimpy death sounds (after all that trouble :\). They seem to be playing a lot more often than I'd intended. EDIT: Seems this might be a bug on my end. I'll have to look into this a bit more, but for now I'm just glad that most people aren't having this issue.

New version's up! Not a lot of changes, mainly some improvements on the frontal sprites' helmets (new on the left, old on the right):

As you can see, my lazy work around the mouthpiece(?) has been made less lazy, and the visor is widened a bit. If you like what you see, grab a download below, or in the first post!

What's New in v1.4:
- Helmets improved and visor widened slightly on frontal sprites (this includes the regular death sprites)
- Sprites are now Doom-paletted!

Pretty big update here! Spruced up the sprites with general cleanup and a coat of polish, full rotations, and added a mugshot.

Unless something comes up, I'm about ready to consider this complete. Hope you enjoy!

This is awesome! This should be bundled with zandronum my opinion.
