[WIP] ZandroNet

Hey guys,

Thought I would make this semi-official by posting a thread on it.

I'm in the process of developing a new browser specifically for the Windows platform; Doomseeker can still keep its reign as being cross-platform. It will be built using Visual Studio 2010 in WPF C#/XAML coupled with the Caliburn.Micro MVVM Framework.

The goal is to make playing Zandronum as easy as possible for new players who have never touched Doom in their life. This goes for joining and creating servers, as well as downloading custom WADs.

Current Progress Screenshot

The first release will consist of the features for Phase I:
  • Browsing, Joining, and Creating Servers
  • Automatic Downloading of WADs
  • Custom content section for viewing featured WADs
In Phase II, we hope to provide some sort of lobby system for players to create their own game. Discussion is still on how we are going to handle this.

Re-posting here, I heard someone suggest ZandroNet for stuff like this.
Make sure someone else doesn't have something cool planned that the name would fit better for first, though.

You can steal a couple features from IDE, country flags and what not ! Also, a bit more color if possible. It looks a bit pale.

Imo, also add the sort support Ide had (like, sort from Server name, or ping, or players in the server)

Looks cool and all but I hope I can still use IDE for this, I can't feel comfortable if I don't browse servers with IDE!

I find this current progress lacking in everything compared to Doomseeker, sorry. This one looks like some kind of quickly rushed Java app, one of the things that I loved about Doomseeker was it's simplicity, yet fine looking design.

Hope you don't mind my opinion.

I know this is still Wip, but, are you planning to change the current theme/layout the browser has? Imo, it should fit the Zandronum Space Like Theme if its going to be a browser only for it.

Also, we are gonna be able to use Custom Servers too, set paths for wads and stuff like that, right? :P

Absolutely. The theme, I hope, will follow the theme of what we see as Zandronum today on the website, or other future designs.

This is looks cool and i think it will be pretty good for new players.
Also put IRC in it and yeah the lobby is epic idea.

What about a better wad downloader like getting files directly from server?
and skins can be doed the same way.. or not?

Anyway... really looks good

I agree, the lobby idea is kind of cool and should stay, about the IRC, should be simple and easy to use, enough to one new player go to #staff or anything.

Eh, you can actually just paste the link on the "wad url" option (By the way, when creating a server, you're also gonna add that right?)

You can't download skins from other players, and neither you should be able to, anyone could just place a little lemming skin on their folder, use it, and abuse it on a Deathmatch server.

Interesting, but doesn't the latest Doomseeker already do all that?
I'm sort of newfag, and I rarely have trouble with the browser :x

I agree, the theme should be more space-based in comparison to the Zandronum theme. And the IRC idea was excellent as well. How about getting that whole "buddy" system to work? Would be great instead of using third-party Steam.

I thought you didn't have to do that unless you were playing single-player. And if so, why use Zandronum as your SP port?
