OpenGL doesnt seem any faster than software

#1

Post by Amordrine » Sat Mar 11, 2017 9:45 pm

So I'm on a new(different) computer now and it doesn't seem any faster than my P4 Single core. This is an AMD quad core @ 2.05ghz which I know isn't great. It is NOT running integrated graphics. I put a Radeon R7 370 Nitro Edition in it and this rig will run just about everything at max settings nice and fluid including Warframe, League of Legends, Rift, etc... but in Zandronum even on OpenGL performance is pathetic. My P4 did an equivalent job to how this is performing and I can't figure out why. I went in CMOS, checked to make sure integrated video wasn't being used, PCIe is set, checked device manager in Win7, R7 is listed as the only display adapter. Everything else flies except Zandro, what am I doing wrong?

This is not any informative.

What's your FPS in OGL? What's your FPS in software?
Also, most likely video related just because you are using AMD. GZDoom never supported ATIs properly, it's quite random.

I checked the fps in software, I went anywhere from 25 to 170+ fps. OpenGL mode is acting like the video card isn't even there. Software mode is vastly smoother and this isn't any junk card either. This thing should be flying at ~2-500fps.

Well one guess that I have (except video related) is that your CPU is not powerful enough. GZDoom and descendants depend on CPU a lot on complex maps — with a good video card it will still spend 99% of the frame time to decide what's to be drawn.

But this level of performance is matching what it did on my P4 rig with AGP video. That can't be right.

Does it happen in Zandro 3.0? If so then what about GzDoom? If it happens in Zandro but not GzDoom then report it on Zandronum's tracker.

Nothing new, GZDoom is poorly written OGL renderer, it works decent only on older nvidia cards
