Norton Detecting Virus with Zandronum 2.0 Download

I'm trying to get a friend to install Zandronum so we can play Doom online together and his Norton Antivirus is detecting viruses with the Zandronum 2.0 download. I'm sure this has already been answered but I couldn't find a post so I just made a thread for simplicity. Any idea why it's picking up viruses? I doubt the download has viruses but it's convinced him to not try and play. Help?

I am surprised people still use Norton, it's terrible. Oh and also no, Zandronum would never have viruses since it's open source and all. Maybe try installing it using the installer instead of the zipped version?

Hello,

Welcome to the forums btw! :)

If you downloaded it from our homepage then it is a false positive and you can safely run the game :)

I knew it didn't. But I think he's just going to be stubborn and not try it now. I'll see if I can convince him to try the installer version.

The worst part is I'm pretty sure if you search for "best antivirus" or related stuff you'll often find Norton at the top of lists despite it having been awful software for a damn long time now. And people read that shit and install it thinking they're safe when usually they're better off without it.

It sounds like you like to live dangerously.

To be honest, no OS is perfectly safe.

While this is certainly true, the simple fact is that the far majority of virus attacks are self-inflicted either through blatantly insecure browsing or worse; running files acquired from questionable sources.

The best antivirus will and has always been responsible browsing, followed by Noscript and Adblock in that order!
Of course, responsibility seems to be a crater on Pluto these days...

Norton is at the same level of avg and windows defender.
The only antivirus that doesn't sucks is Kaspersky and bitdeffender.
EDIT: Norton is not even being tested anymore by serious antivirus reviewers http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparatives-reviews/
(even Baidu is being tested)

Windows is just very safe centered. That is why all those anti viruses are made for.

Because the end user is obsessed with security.

Hah. The end user couldn't care less.

The simple fact is that most virus authors simply target the largest demographic for maximum spread,
that being Windows. (90% market share - Win7 alone counts for 55% of the world's pc's)
This fits perfectly with AV companies' desire to move product,
as they can sell both hysteria AND a cure to the largest userbase around.

First, tell your friend to change his antivirus.

Second, tell him to download the installer only from Zand's homepage.

Third, @Darcia: Did you wonder at least once why all Windows versions have periodic security updates?

Totally disagree, Norton is nothing compared to AVG. Even though it's slow at updating, it's protected me against a lot of real threats and it doesn't contain very many false-positives.

The Internet Security edition has a great heurestic engine IMO.

I don't think you can rate anti-virus poorly just because you actually believed a crack's instructions to disable it.
