[FOR STARTERS] Explaining the Options Menus and Other Settings

How to Set Up Your Mouse Settings
just like in other FPS games
Step 1: Start up Zandronum with your IWAD of choice.
Step 2: In the main menu, select OPTIONS, then MOUSE OPTIONS.

Step 3: Now I will explain what each setting is.

Enable Mouse - This enables and disables mouse usage for looking.
Overall Sensitivity - This sets how easily you turn using the mouse.
Prescale Mouse Movement - This changes to compensate for screen sizes.
Smooth Mouse Movement - This smooths out the mouse movement.
Turning Speed - This effects how fast you turn. (EX: CoD sensitivity)
Mouselook Speed - This effects how fast your mouse-looking is in-game.
Forward/Backward Speed - This effects how fast you go fwd/bwd.
Strafing Speed - This effects how fast you strafe.
Always Mouselook - This sets if you will use the mouse to look or not.
Invert Mouse - Inverts the turning with direction - (up = down, etc.)
Lookspring - Makes the mouse go fwd/bwd for movement.
Lookstrafe - Makes the mouse go left/right for movement.

Okay, in order to do console-style mouselooking, set the following.
Enable Mouse - YES
Always Mouselook - ON
Lookspring - OFF
Lookstrafe - OFF

This makes it so that you can look left, right, up, and down with the mouse. The rest is all preference.

If I have anything wrong, PM me and I will fix it.

This thread was created for those who have trouble setting up the mouse.

Remove Spectator Message
for recording purposes
Step 1: Go to OPTIONS and select GO TO CONSOLE. This will open the console where commands to set options manually may be entered. You may use the GRAVE key (right under ESCAPE) to access this at any time.
Step 2: Type in "r_drawspectatingstring 0" - this is the setting that displays the "SPECTATING - PRESS SPACE TO JOIN" at the bottom of the screen. (I may have this wrong, it could be spectator, not spectating.)
Step 3: Go into a game and don't join. The spectator string should be gone!

NOTE: To re-enable the spectator sign at the bottom, simply re-enter the command, except replace the '0' with a '1'.

I will add more as I go.

There's a reason why the Zandronum Wiki exists. If people continue to have a blind-eye about the wiki and its general purpose while continually thinking that the forums is the best place for articles, then the wiki should be pulled - as it is a waste of resources and time for those that actually manage it and try to upkeep it. Articles that presently exist on these forums will be outdated and they're unmaintainable in the future (are you or anyone is going to update this post five years from now?), while the articles that currently exist or if ever created on the wiki can be up-kept by anyone at any time.

I give up, and I am getting tired of getting slapped in the face.

Oh, I wasn't aware that there was an article on that. Sorry about that!
Anyways, if it is a feature in ZDoom and ZDoom-based ports, it should be in the ZDoom Wiki as well, I presume.

Alright, I'll try to direct newbies to the Wiki from here on out.

I was wondering what Lookspring does. Thanks for this post. It helps me out alot. I wonder, could you do more like, explain what all the other cvars and junk do? I have only "What I'm Told/Played around with till I figured it out" info on each cvar.

Sure, anything in specific? Maybe even a whole menu for me to explain?
Keep in mind like the post above me that the Wiki can also be referred to for things like this. Though, I try to make it as simple as possible so everyone can understand, no matter who.

So even though you are aware now that we have a wiki, you still don't put your guide in the wiki but just in a forum thread?

Well, I'm trying to simplify as much as possible. It's more like quick tips in the sense of explaining this.

Quick tips can be put in the Wiki too.

If anything, I can go ahead and add the stuff into the Wiki if you wish, Though it might take some time, as this hotspot is really... really slow.

But seeing as I'm at my desk now, I need to figure out what these cvars do...
  • 1. vid_hwaalines
    2. gl_fakecontrast
    3. snd_3dspread
    4. snd_drawoutput
    5. snd_profile (No Clue if this is ever needed..)
    6. snd_midipatchset
I tried looking though the ST/Zandronum(is there a Zandro Source?) and the Zdoom Wiki, even the Zandronum Wiki.. No Go, so if you can figure out what those do, I will give you credit for finding out heh.

EDIT: Upon further looking into the Zdoom wiki, I have found out some cvars, but others I still don't know what it do, or if I should set a value for it in my config. Snd_Profile is in the wiki, but has no Definition. So I guess its not needed...

VID_HWAALINES forces hardware to anti-alias when using Direct3D rendering acceleration in software, from what I remember.

Well gosh dang it.. Thanks to another post, I found out what Vid_Hwaalines does. Right in the post that Infer made, where it says [1], when you follow it, the line under of where its pointing at.

But thanks anyways Llewellyn, if you can find out what the rest of the cvars in the list do, I will put credit for ya in my config.

I think it creates lighting contrast on walls to make it look better. Try toggling it on and off in both light and dark areas and you'll see what I mean.

Okay then, I'll take note of that in the future.

Ah.. Well, I guess that explains that. Thanks heh. I will put your name in my credits list in my config once I get around to packing it up and rezipping it. least now, my configs are not a Mess.. I spent all night reorganizing them somewhat.

It actually emulates the Doom2.exe (software) style of contrasting by making closer areas lighter and farther areas darker, this was used in Doom to make it so the user could more easily tell distance as without this objects easily got distorted without the use of the real rendering styles we have today.
I think snd_3DSpread has something to do with stereo based sound rather than surround sound, or multichannel sound. I know it's like an angle or something, maybe the angle distance inbetween the two speakers. So like if you had the two speakers as headphones in each ear it would be 180, but if they were infront of you at an angle it would be 90. (That was all a guess by looking at the cvar and defaultvalue of 180.)

I cant see the "miscellaneous" menu in options. There are must be IWAD selection, cache, and other things (according to ZDoom)
