FNF #153: HystericCTF CTF and UDMX+Samsara DM

by The Toxic Avenger
Do you like CTF? Do you like Nutty? Did you ever want to see what their kid would be like? Now you can, with EuroFNF having HystericCTF, a wad with 12 CTF maps (11 in use) that think outside the box (you'll have to play to find out!). For you Americans (or those in the area), we have some UDMX with Samsara. Suit up and get ready to kill some folks!

Also, if the Ranger kills your FPS in Samsara, try changing the samsara_cl_expparticles to something low!

Samsara was amazing, as always.

From testing and actually playing Hysteric CTF in FNF, we thought that the maps looked relatively good and played well; but what I'm hearing now is that every one of them sucked. We would appreciate some more detailed feedback.

As I had already told to you on IRC, the maps are very lackluster. They were all very flat, the architecture was almost non-existant and the texturing was very, very bland and clashed in a few places (mostly the green-grey combos in some). Not to forget that the gimmicks (demon spawns in Map05, Z-Gravity in that other one, conveyor belt) felt just downright terrible due to the execution.

Code: Select all

[15:47:10] <@Qent> hysteric pales in comparison to idl2013?
[15:47:13] <Hybrid> yes
[15:48:44] <@Qent> map01, 04, 05, 29, and 31 all have big open areas O.o
[15:58:30] <@Qent> zdctf11 is not too big an open area, and map03, 08, 20, and 28 do not have problematic weapon placement?
And, really, the fact that you completely forgot that these maps are far better than HCTF ones and have a metric ton of more flow in comparision makes it seem like you have a very serious problem with knowing how much quality is in each FNF "candidate".

EDIT:

Code: Select all

[15:22:13] <@Qent> all maps were tested
[15:22:23] <@Qent> are you talking about map01?
[15:22:34] <Hybrid> [15:21:41] <@Qent> which i added in later but never got played
[15:22:51] <@Qent> never got played for fnf
I almost forgot about this part. So, what did really happen with the testing?

And for completeness, you also said you prefer vanilla Doom-style "ladders" (very narrow stairs) to the deep water "ladders," and you disliked the reverb in deep water ladders.

Conveyor belts was MAP07. Which one was zero-gravity?

That quote was taken way out of context:
Code: Select all

[05:40]	<Qent>	how does the other stuff compare to, say, idl2013 in your opinion?
[05:45]	<Qent>	Hybrid
[05:46]	<Hybrid>	it pales in comparision
[05:47]	<Qent>	hysteric pales in comparison to idl2013?
[05:47]	<Hybrid>	(HCTF to IDL2013 if that's what you apparently meant and HCTF loses)
[05:47]	<Hybrid>	yes
[05:48]	<Qent>	map01, 04, 05, 29, and 31 all have big open areas O.o
[05:50]	<Hybrid>	but I don't have to spend a fuck-long ammount of time SR50ing to traverse real flat sector masses like in HCTF
[05:51]	<Qent>	map11
[05:51]	<Qent>	er
[05:51]	<Qent>	zdctf11
[05:53]	<Qent>	weapon placement in idl2013 map03, 08, and 20
[05:54]	<Qent>	oh and 28
[05:56]	<Hybrid>	all fine
[05:58]	<Qent>	zdctf11 is not too big an open area, and map03, 08, 20, and 28 do not have problematic weapon placement?
[05:58]	<Hybrid>	OF COURSE
[05:59]	<Qent>	ok ok
I asked about very specific features of those maps, not including flow.

It's obvious there's a problem. That's the whole reason for this discussion.

We decided that MAP01 was too awkward and confusing, and MAP10 was borderline.

Here's a question for you. What constitutes the flow?

Also, the music was bad too.
It's obvious there's a problem. That's the whole reason for this discussion.
Which brings me to the situation with the FNF staff itself. How much do you do yourself? And the rest of the currently active FNF team when it comes to EU events and quality control for them?

Really, following the events of previous FNFs, this is really calling for a new staff set-up which has people who know what they are putting up and are dedicated to it.

Sorry that eurofnf didn't play out so well, but sometimes we veer a little from standard stuff because it has a chance of doing suprisingly well. We would have never had success with NuttyDM or Strifedoom if we hadn't tried it, and we'll make sure to compensate for next fnf too.

Don't forget not to ignore every good fnf as if they don't exist, as the occasional bad ones are just speckles on a silver plate and are largely outnumbered to the successes we have been having. We are also willing to let new members in staff if they apply here and meet the qualifications.

I volunteer myself to be on the US FNF staff if you guys need help. I have some ideas.

Doesn't change the fact that you guys have now repeatedly hosted pretty terrible wads, something that should have been averted by proper testing.

Might want to consider adding WADs that do very poorly to the blacklist.
