Beginners Guide to Private CTF [as of 2017]

#1

Post by Catastrophe » Sun Sep 03, 2017 1:48 am

Welcome, lately I've seen a surge of new players entering "priv" (a short-hand term for "Private CTF") and that's awesome; you people are the key to keeping CTF healthy and alive on this port. Unfortunately there's no simple guide for newbies on how to access these servers and its rules. If you are completely new, please read until the end of the section titled "What's the basic rules of Private CTF?"
What is Private CTF?
Basically higher quality Capture The Flag matches.
How can I access Private CTF servers?
Obtain an IRC client and join the channels listed below for the server you're trying to join and ask the admins (Their names start with an @). To join a channel in IRC simply type "/join #channelhere" and hit enter in the chatbox. NJ/DE Funcrusher - /join #funcrusher
Grandvoid - /join #grandvoid
What's the basic rules of Private CTF?
These are the general rules to every Private CTF server. Rule of thumb: If you aren't sure about something, ASK!
  • DON'T JOIN THE GAME UNLESS YOU ARE TOLD TO JOIN.
  • No leaving mid-game if you are playing.
  • Don't distract players that are in-game. This includes calling votes, puking scripts, etc.
  • If you just wanna watch/afk in the server put a star at the end of your name. (So in my case I'd change my name from Catastrophe to Catastrophe*)
I got picked as a captain... What do I do?
IF YOU ARE A CAPTAIN: You will know if you're chosen as a captain if your name appears on the screen (If you aren't sure, open the console and it'll say who was chosen). Please make sure you pay attention to teamchat and listen to what your team has to say.
  • Two captains are chosen by running "puke 903" in the console. One captain gets first-pick advantage, and the other gets map advantage.
  • Each captain will take turns picking one player at a time starting with the captain who has first-pick (as indicated by the "puke 903" message).
  • Once each team has 3 players (or 4 players), the captain who has map advantage chooses what map to play.
  • Once you and the other captain are done telling your team what to do on the map that was chosen, let the other team know you are ready.
  • If both teams are ready, call a changemap vote to the map that was chosen, join your team, and start playing!
Note: I highly recommend asking your team what to do if you are completely new to being a captain. Feel free to just ask your team what positions they prefer, what map they wanna play if you have map-advantage, etc.
I got picked to play... What do I do?
If one of the captains calls your name then you are "picked". Follow the steps below.
  • Join the team of the guy who picked you
  • When the map to be played is announced, the captain will let you know what to do. If you aren't sure, then ask. Make sure you are reading the chat and don't piss your captain off by ignoring him.
  • Once the map changes to the selected map, join your captains team and do whatever the captain told you to do. This could mean guarding the flag all-game, fragging enemies in the middle of the map, etc.
I didn't get picked to play :(... What do I do?
Basically just wait until the next match starts and hope you get picked.

Let me add that to the compilation

Ammar Guide to CTF - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5JeULmUurY
Water's guide to priv - https://zandronum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524
Legion's guide to competitive CTF - https://zandronum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=444
MassVC -idl.[bad site]/index.php?topic=532.0 Dead link
Zdaemon CTF - http://www.zdaemon.org/?CMD=info&NAME=ctfguide
Devestation's Doom Guide - https://zandronum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=904
Grand Master Capodecima's guide - https://zandronum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=6697

Since we don't have enough of these. At least this guide shows exact things to do in priv so I am guessing these are for mexicans?

Sadly that MassVC topic is gone forever. Also, all the above guides are incorrect. They need to be in Spanish to accommodate the new priv players.

That MassVC link keeps redirecting me to install bloatware for Chrome, could you fix/remove it?
