MM8BDM world domination

#1

Just a heads up, our server lists have been taken over by MM8BDM:
Spoiler: (Open)

If you're wondering why this happened all of a sudden, take a peak at this video:

I posted this in informative purposes, in case you're wondering why MM8BDM has so many players now. You can just filter out these servers and go back to game.

The reason it's shot up SO MUCH is because he made a video (having a ton of subs helps) painstakingly explaining how to set up your controls and settings and stuff in Skulltag. SO many newschool gamers are too lazy or just don't understand what options they have to tweak and just give up, and I've tried to get around this by making a launcher client (specifically for MM8BDM) but it's really tricky to just expect people to do this that without in-game stuff doing it for you.

Please use this spike as evidence that Zandronum/Skulltag (and EVERY DOOM PORT actually) would be a lot more popular if it was easier to set up for newschool gamers. Think how steam works, they expect everything to just be click and play with default controls set up and crap. I'm not saying that this is the sole reason why not as many people play, but imagine how many extra potential players you would fish in if the engine wasn't so dated to set up (download the engine, doom, launcher, PWADS you need to play on a server etc etc).

Thing is MM8BDM's community has nothing to do with Zandrotag's and most of the people who play that don't give a shit about us. It's not like they're going to want to play something that they don't consider as recognizable as Megaman.

I'd be happy to do this to make it easier for both parties, but I have no idea how. PM me or something if you know more about this kind of stuff, I do have a VPS that currently does nothing but host my minecraft server.

Eh, I know a few people who have played MM8BDM and bought Doom just to see what other crazy mods exist. No lie! (but they now play GVH... DON'T HATE ME)

I'm not in any position to blame the creator for this one. The wads themselves spawned the communities within them.

I have noticed this, I usually play dm or duel and it's always MM8BDM or GVH nowadays. but yeah, it's not a bad thing really I just prefer the old maps.

Eh I gave it a shot, not bad.

EDIT: I also agree Skulltag/Zandronum should come with wsad and mouse enabled by default, if this is a multiplayer oriented port there should be nothing wrong with that.

Excuse me, but let me explain a bit about the things: MM8DM is the "testing grounds" for unstables releases of Skulltag, and is planned to also be testing grounds of unstable Zandronum releases. Also, rarely the server list gets more than 10 Megaman.Wad servers. So rarely that the last time I checked it (yesterday) it had no more than 8 servers up, 3 or 4 dedicated. There are several guesses about why MM8DM has "died" over time, like the lack of variety, excess of modifications, difficult to obtaining the files required, unpleasant behavior of certain people (specially those who like to Vote Kick people for reasons like "The God says"), lack of "real" campaign mode (as the one used is just DM with bosses once in a full moon) or, as said, complicated configuration.

I don't know what is the real cause, I left the forums. So, I suppose their better choice would be to make a poll (without permissions for reply) and see which of the above the whole community thinks that is the real problem.

But now I'm kind of glad it is getting its spotlight, and you should be to! There's nothing worse than seeing a game with loads of potential die.

Agreed. Right now you can see about 14 MM servers, most of which have atleast 15 people playing in them. Approx 80% of the ST playercount on IDE consists of them . They should probably have their own master server considering there is no visible connection between both communities.

Not everybody here uses wsad

But yeah some sort of default control layout similiar to steam games and/or some sort of choice between different popular multiplayer layouts is a good idea to remove the hassle of setting up correct keys to play.

Well... I think that's mostly based on a opinion but to me a connection is that they both use the same engine, and are both FPS experiences. Like I said before, some people have played MM8BDM and then explored Skulltag's other mods.

Either way, if someone points me in the right direction, I'm happy to set up a separate master server for it if possible.

That's difficult to believe when MM8BDM has always used an outdated alpha.

Merge them instead of separating them.

Incorrect, my friend. Their last update was before Skulltag closed its doors, when the last stable was 98d. And what is MM8DM using? 98e.

I personally don't care whether megaman is using the Skulltag master.
For those who are annoyed by the server list in IDE, here is a simple solution:

Click on the big F button on the IDE toolbar to bring up Server list filters. Check "IWads", add "megagame.wad" into the list and click the icon next to IWads until it shows "Hide server". OK.

Not a rocket science, huh.

True, the two "communities" are rather isolated (whether purposefully or not I don't know) from each other - by this I specifically mean the forum/site that players use to communicate with each other. If the two communities weren't isolated, we would be sharing the same site and forum as well. The main things that we share in common include the port (in this case, versions 98d & 98e of Skulltag) and the master server.

The fact is that there is a possibility that some players frequently play both MM8BDM and other mods, but many players may not as well. The question we must all answer is whether or not the two communities are meant to be separated from each other or merged together. Then a decision can be made regarding whether or not MM8BDM's community deserves its own master server as well as its own site and forum, or if it could viably survive together sharing the same master server as Zandronum.

EDIT: I'm not too sure, but I think one of ZandroNet's intentions was to give a filtering option so that people could play whatever mod(s) they choose and to filter out other servers with ease. It also appears that IDE already has such a feature.

I think there should at least be a gap in terms of forums cause... Well, holy crap just look at my forum. Endless topics of people asking for specific help with MM8BDM specific mechanics. I'm sure you don't want that kind of stuff clogging this place up.
