Playing with Capped 35 FPS

#1

Post by Ermac » Tue Aug 07, 2012 2:57 pm

I wanna make new thread about how you evaluate playing with Capped 35 FPS, is it better, how it affects gameplay. I probably have sense like the mouse is more responsive, physics is more natural, something like that.

I wanna ask how much ZDoom (following by Skulltag and Zandronum) solved that fps cap, whether it is solved entirely.

What are people impressions by playing: CTF n' Duels with it, Jumpmaze with it..

35fps feels choppy and makes me unable to hit anything.

I use capped FPS for CTF/duels, it increased my playing ability dramatically. Uncapped makes everything too smooth and harder to hit for me. Plus it ruins you if you play on odamex/Zdaemon. I also use software for duels/CTF.

For mods, I go uncapped and use OpenGL.

It looks smooth enough to me, and so I play with it.
It also reduces CPU strain, so yay.

If I play on Capped FPS everything skips around randomly and I have no idea why. Like every 2-5 seconds the other players and myself will teleport (online only.)
But I can't use VSYNC because it doesn't work and just goes up to like 1000 fps (in OGL) causing my laptop to overheat in like 15 minutes lol.
Also I can't really hit as well on 35 FPS because swingshotting is harder.

Capped FPS for me. Mostly out of habit, but it has the bonus of not heating up as much and having a much more responsive mouse.

And no, Vsync makes mouse lag even worse.

I prefer uncapped, the choppiness brought on by 35fps, causes a headache for me after a while of playing, since I'm used to the fluidity of 60fps. (Speaking of which, it would be nice to have a 60fps cap, instead of completely uncapped... would save on CPU usage for sure.)

I thankfully don't get any mouse lag when uncapped, so, that part isn't an issue for me.

Not Videocard VSYNC...
Forcing VSYNC with my videocard is nice and fluid with perfect response rates.

Well hey, some games still do go for the 30fps approach. Take a look at the Halo series up till Reach.

my computer is a steaming pile of crap that can't break 40 FPS, so the difference between capped and uncapped is practically unperceivable

Capped FPS kind of looks horrible to me.
I do notice the jitter very much and easily and it becomes very distracting.

I wanna ask, if you have played other ports, ZDaemon or (and) Odamex
and you compare Skulltag cap with ZDaemon or Odamex fps cap side by side, Skulltag cap jitters more, do you have that feeling ?

After playing uncapped for so long, having my FPS capped at 35 seems off to me. It's not unplayable though, it just takes me some time to get used to it.

I think I forgot to note that I've gotten so far as to lock any other game I have to 35fps since I'm so used to it. But yeah, even Quakelive :I

Uncapped, giving me around 200~ FPS across all games on software. Playing with 35 FPS cap makes it harder for me aim, in contrast to what some of the other players say (check, above :P)

Uncapped makes me feel sick. Also Doom is an ugly game, smoothness will not change that.

Of course going from one to the other will need adjusting. Just like driving 65 on the freeway then going into a school zone.

I play capped. Like Watermelon stated, it feels too smooth and throws me off. Capped also makes the game feel faster paced to me while uncapped smoothness makes it feel slower making me overshoot and miss everything. Of course I do this on capped mode too since I just suck at games. Capped makes it a bit easier though.

VSync'ed.

ST tears as all hell otherwise, and the lappy gets hot.
