Getting lost on large Doom maps

#1

Post by Cerebus » Wed Aug 01, 2012 2:18 am

Don't you just hate it when you get lost on large maps (i.e. Doom 2 map29), just going in circles for long periods of time before finally figuring out how to proceed?
PS This might be the wrong forum category for something like this, so let me know just in case. :)
On the charge of playing the Sega Saturn port of Doom, I find myself guilty as charged LOL

unioncit.wad. a classic. one of my all-time-favorite "huge" maps. that and Zalewa's "Tribute".

i never really have a problem with "blind-alleys". If I do, i usually just NEXTMAP after 5 or so straight minutes of running around in circles.

Depends on the map. Alien Vendetta's map 20 (the pyramid) is a prime example of one of my favorite "huge" maps.

Sadly I know that map like the back of my hand, and in all other cases, TAB is your friend.

How do you get lost on MAP29, that's like nothing but a linear path aside from the wall crack you're supposed to drop down into

It's literally just a giant circle

I do indeed. A rotating automap overlay can sometimes help, but sometimes not.

I know, but this was about a year or two ago (before I even began to grasp how widespread the Doom community was) and I used MAP29 as a example because at the time I played this map, I was playing the Xbox 360 port of Doom 2 and since you couldn't look up or down, it was very easy to get lost once you ran out of enemies to shoot at. Plus, I was at such high elevations that when I headed in a downward direction, you couldn't see what was below you. I was basically guessing where I was stepping. My skills have significantly improved since then (used to barely get by on "I'm to young to die", now at about high-end "Hurt Me Plenty!" to a low-end "Ultra Violence", somewhere around there)

Yeah, getting lost is annoying, but I use the automap and mark spots (good thing I remembered about that old doom feature) a lot.

Yeah that would be nice, except Randy no'd it on several occasions over at ZDoom. I forgot why, exactly. Something about not being compatible with pre-UDMF sector boundaries.

...that map also was my first idea. And every time I play it again I get lost.
Especially when I smoked something or drank a beer...IMPOSSIBLE :D

Try ZDoom with

Code: Select all

am_textured 1
and

Code: Select all

genglnodes 1

I never got lost in Doom II.
First and single time I lost on any Doom map was in E3M5. I really didn't know where the fuck I'm supposed to go.
Then was Heretic, pretty cool level design but I didn't get lost.
Then Hexen...
Shit I'm still trying to figure out what to do. Anyone help?
I'm now on Seven Portals nd I have no idea how to open the damn door.

I have Sunder... HOW... do you survive on any difficulty when you start out in front of 2 Revenants, 2 Hell Knights and an Archvile with only a shotgun or without using cheats?!

Perhaps you can send me links to these WADs so I can get an idea on what you mean.

I suggest Googling for Hexen Walkthroughs.

I barely get lost on my second time of playing maps.
The one map that I almost gave up on was "Happy Time Circus 2" for there was so much exploration.
