Just what IS Zandronum, anyway?

I looked around trying to find a definitive answer as to just what Zandronum really is, and why this happening, but couldn't find one - just vague hints and rumors. So I'll be the one to ask the big questions:

- What is Zandronum?
- What is to be of Skulltag?
- Why is this happening?

Can we get some clarification via official statements?

zandronum is an offshoot of skulltag that, well, basically is skulltag
skulltag will "become" zandronum, and skulltag IS zandronum
this is happening because carnevil is an asshole

In essence, yeah, that's effectively what's happening. We're using the fork as an opportunity to rebuild some things within the client itself as well as paving way to help reform the staff policy and the community.

As for your questions, here's a more direct statement:
Ten wrote: - What is Zandronum?
Zandronum is a direct continuation of Skulltag, being used as a form of rebirth for the port and as a method to help rebuild the community (Because let's face it, everyone knows a lot of things could have used a hard reform here. I'm not denying it.)
Ten wrote: - What is to be of Skulltag?
Effectively dead, with the entirety of the development team and the staff migrating over to this new entity. Skulltag.com I'm sure will remain floating around, or not, depending on Carnevil's mood, and we may preserve certain parts of it, i.e. skulltag_data.pk3 which is due to be unsupported as an autoloaded mechanism due to legality issues and basically is a game of "Who did what?" but is necessary for preservation because of the amount of wads that actually utilize it's resources and as a result cannot be killed off just on a whim, Skulltag.net's domain until it expires out (Which is being renewed only once as far as I know after expiration, I'm not familiar with this entirely. Someone more qualified can probably answer this.), etc.
We intend to try and make migration as seamless as possible for our existing users that just don't really even care about all of these politics, we're still working out the kinks.

There was a wall of text here before, but to shorten things up and put back a few things behind us: We want a fresh start with our port now that we have moved.

Hopefully this should satisfy your questions until we can get a rock-solid general FAQ going.

What would it be like, if this actually happened?

Is it going to affect the gameplay? Will we be able to still use IDE, Doomseeker or <put that browser you are using or planned to use>? If yes, hooray? If no, what should we use? If any of those questions was already answered, forgive my spam loving fingers and/or ignore/delete/eat/whatever this post.

It will become an official game mode, probably replacing the skulltag game mode.

If the developer of IDE updates his thing (which I hope he does) then you probably will.

It will affect stock gameplay in the sense that if a modder has used the dependency of the Skulltag custom weaponry or mapping resources, they will no longer be available and most likely will cause errors.
This issue can be resolved by having the hosts load skulltag_data.pk3 as a pwad alongside the mod they intend to host, making Zandronum function exactly the same as Skulltag in this regard. Otherwise, most ZDoom-based/Boom-based? (Don't know the right word for it. Most port compatibility I guess.) pwads will function fine as is.

Both are pending updates, but IDE in it's current iteration functions fine if you link zandronum.exe in the Skulltag path in Directories->Programs. They will continue to be supported as usual.

Crap... I'm going to need to update my mods. Any actors that are still in Zandronum, like the CTF Flags, Medals, or Runes?

By the way, I was the one who sprited the "In-Console/Menu" Icon above players' heads in Skulltag. (When I was under the name Hidon) You guys have full permission to use those.

So far I didn't remove any actors, we thought about moving some of them out of zandronum.pk3 though. In any case, your mod should continue to work as long as you manually load skulltag_data.pk3 (and possibly skulltag_actors.pk3 if we should decide to start something like this).

Hmm, I wonder if having the actors present but without resources in the port itself will justify backporting them to ZDoom so 'replaces' will work properly...

*pipe dream*

Anyhow, good to see this is all official-ish now. Silly name aside. :P

It satisfies the first two, but not the last one because it literally wasn't answered. And it's the most important one. I think it's kind of obvious that it had something to do with Carn, so why the big secret? Give us the delicious details.

Please understand that our development team would much rather get past the drama ensuing it directly, and as a result, we'd like to avoid pointing fingers past the simple fact that we are no longer in association with him or affiliated with the project known as Skulltag any more.

However I'm not trying to keep it a secret by any means, since it's silly to pretend as if it never happened but for the time being I'm not answering it in full detail for now in the public's eye- Not while things have the potential to get heated very quickly. You guys can ask me more casually though and I'll probably be more obliged to talk just a bit more in detail in private.
