Which SP mappacks are good to play?

So, probably between next week or the next one I'll be on vacation. In that time I'll have some free time that I want to spend playing Doom WADs, mainly SP mappacks. Thing is I don't have a clue where to start from since I don't have too much Doom culture aside from the casual survival, AoW or Idiotic LMS and that's why I want to ask you guys if you could recommend me some good mappacks to play with. All difficulties are welcome but obviously will start from easiest to hardest and slaughter maps. It doesn't matter if it is an old WAD or one ofthe newest.

The objective is to gain some experience to tackle the hardest maps the way you see people clearing them on YT (vanilla, no death, no cheese, 30 min UV-Max runs). Also, it would be cool if this could be used as a reference thread for newbies who want some SP action.

Memento Mori 1&2 have good maps that are still challenging, but not as much as Hell Revealed or Alien Vendetta

Old classics: http://doomwiki.org/wiki/List_of_notable_WADs (my favs are plutonia, hr2, av)

alternate approach: perhaps start here with wads that haven't been played 300000 times since 199X: http://www.doomworld.com/22years/best1.ph

Return to Hadron, Valiant, Swiftdeath, Sunlust are all up your alley for 'gaining skill'

I've started playing MM1. It starts pretty easy and ramps up in challenge consistently, no sudden jumps in difficulty at least for the first 10 levels. I was always under the impression Alien Vendetta was pretty easy except near the end but I guess that was because we were playing it survival.

You're right. Valiant overall needs more than average skills to beat it. I heard Sunlust is like a spiritual succesor of Sunder in terms of arquitechture and extreme difficulty. Two months ago tried to go vanilla on Sunder's maps03 and 04 and it showed me it requires lots of skill to beat them. While in Sunlust I don't think I've managed to beat one map yet at least on survival.

Return to Hadron is a name I've read many times lately. I'll give it a go when I finish MM1
