Your most nostalgic WADs! Come share the nostalgia?
What are your most nostalgic, memorable WADs that you have played?
What are your most favorite, nostalgic moments from those wads?
My most nostalgic and memorable WADs are Alien Vendetta and Doom Barracks Zone
I have a lot of nostalgia from those. I remember playing Doom Barracks Zone Co-Op a lot long time ago in the summer on Zdaemon, on the map called "Freight Trains" with great battles between the trains, and the epic huge battles on the map "Sky Base" with the music of Storm Eagle from Mega Man.
As for Alien Vendetta, my most memorable map was Misri Halek (Map20), I absolutely loved the egyptian atmosphere, the design, and the layout of the level. The music was fit too, I liked it very much, it is called "Fight The Logic If You Can" by Chris Laverdure.

RE: Your most nostalgic WADs! Come share the nostalgia?
Memento Mori II has the best soundtrack of any megawad hands down, it's original, creative and excellent heavy metal, their isn't a single track I dislike and it complements the design of each level with the faster more violent tunes being selected for plutonia type maps and softer ones for my exploration based, ambush ones.
My favourite track is 21 - 'Dredge' with it's slow, rhythmic build up culminating in a furious clash of heavy metal, the second is 24 - 'Gloom Keep' which is the most poetic Doom midi I've ever heard. You feel a real sense of accomplishment and awe after finishing the megawad.
The second is Requiem for being all around great classic level design with another classic sound track albeit not comparable to MM2, my favourite track is 05 - 'Mystic's Glance' which is another poetic and chill song, very unique haven't heard it's style anywhere else, the soundtrack again leaves a strong memorable impression on me, not a surprise as many of the tracks have been reused again in other wads.
The most influential wad for me is Sunder with it's out of this world architecture which really creates an epic and engrossing ordeal as you try in futility to beat each monstrously insane level. Everything right down to the choice of 'Intermission' music leaves a sense of dread rather than awe at beating a map, thinking whats to come next will be x10 worse.

RE: Your most nostalgic WADs! Come share the nostalgia?
Doom City is a great 1995 map with custom textures. It only takes about 10 minutes to beat but seeing this many custom resources in Doom back then was astonishing in itself.
HELLRUN is a 1996 map and was sort of like an early slaughtermap, though pretty tame by today's standards. The layout is massive and incredibly clever, and it's a lot of fun exploring all the interconnecting rooms and finding all the secrets. Beating this in one sitting will take about 40 minutes.
Area 51 from 1997. Another wad that blew me away with all the custom resources - It's a really fun themed map. Not very long, but well built and enjoyable the whole way. Map02 sucks by comparison but the wad is still miles ahead of most of it's contemporaries. Most of you will probably like it.
Bermuda is a pretty sweet '99 map. It's a little plain by todays standards but is well built and a lot of fun. Will probably take you about 20 minutes to beat. A few cool tricks here and there that weren't so commonly seen back then. Fun stuff.
Doomed 2 Die is a not-so-great Megawad from 1996. Unlike the other WADs on this list, I don't exactly reccommend it, but it has nostalgia for me as it's the first megawad I ever played, probably in about 1998. It's interesting to see just how far wad construction has come since then..
Momento Mori, Dwango5/6, The early UDM wads and Greenwar are also very nostalgic for me, I discovered them all in 2001/2002 via Doom Connector. Thus started my love of Deathmatch and access to many, many more wads. The rest is history as they say.

For me it's the Atlantis map from the doom wad station and Psychophobia, both of which are still awesome :D.

Gotta give that UACMN does have that 'nostalgia' factor (for the wrong reasons)! Too bad Avast thinks it's a Trojan.Combinebobnt wrote: uacmn

I have to say that Armageddon Invasion 2 is pretty nostalgic being one of the first wads I played back in the later days of Skulltag. I also have to say that Memento Mori (One - Found that Two was harder to get into) was always a fun and nostalgic wad for me (especially without mods like Hard DooM or Complex DooM) and even wads like Icarus and Dystopia 3 (the former being an extreme case of ugliness) still have some of that nostalgia value. Even a couple of the Chex wads have some nostalgia value for me.
Can't really say I hold any real nostalgic attachments to any old duel/dm maps (judas, dwango, etc.), though EonDM (even though it's a much newer pack) does hold some nostalgic value given the testing sessions I remember of it from about a couple years back. That and it's fun as hell.
Did I forget to mention the obligatory Hell Revealed II?

What can I say about UAC Military Nightmare? What can I? It’s magical. Everything about it is just amazing. An amazing, full orchestrated soundtrack puts together an amazing atmosphere to the game, while the intense, but fun and rewarding gameplay prove to be more than enough for the bulk of the game. And then, it’s set atop good, strong, original characters with heart and soul poured into them. The story is something out of some God-like scribe. And it’s tied together with amazingly simple to use, yet complex multiplayer capabilities and online play that will keep you hooked for hours.
STORY: The plot is something for cinema. The lead character, Cory, having moved to the White House with this father (who is a world class Chef, now cooking for the President of the United States) lives his life, until one day, a make-a-toy contest arises. Cory constructs a life-like “bobble-head” of Prez “President of the United States”. However, and evil scientist plans to steal Cory’s work and change it into a mind-control machine, to take over the world. Cory brings it on himself to stop the evil mastermind’s plot, and save the world as we know it.
CHARACTERS: Characters in UAC Military Nightmare are just incredible. I have never before seen a cast so vibrant, alive, or 3-D. From the wise-cracking, sexually undertoned main character, Cory; to the witty, sarcastic and yet noble Prez. No other game I have played has delivered this amount of heart to its characters. You really get a feel for them, and in time you’ll eventually come to experience their pains and hardships and share with their feelings as you progress through the game. There’s not a single character in this game I could criticize in any ways. Even the evil super villain is attainable of all the respect you have. The cast is just, in a single comment, amazingly real and life-like to the point you can’t help but feel for them in every way.
GAMEPLAY: Gameplay is just dumbfounding. I can find myself lost for hours on end with it’s controlling powers. Cory takes on many different means of transportation and abilities as he goes through the White House. The world is vast to the point where it might be a bad thing it’s so large. I have played this game as many times through as I can remember, and yet, every single time something new or something different is found. I sometimes surprise myself when I find something hidden away in an area I had visited previously so many times before. The diverse Online capabilities easily outdo any other game of our time, as well. I can sometimes plug into an online game and end up 16 hours later, with my brain fried from so much Cory. And with free content, good and strong community, and regular updates- this is something to get worked up about.
MUSIC: Music is mindblowing. Think of every video game track you can. Now multiply that by 50. That’s not even close to the UAC Military Nightmare soundtrack. Sadly, the musical line up was never released for download on the Internet, for no one had the heart to do so. The music in this game is worth every penny you own. From mellow tracks to tracks that get you pumped up for a long boss battle to the soft, soothing melodies that can calm any anger. The OST is a must have for any video game or music fan.
Overall, it’s just an amazing game. Nothing, and I mean nothing I have played to date comes even close. It’s just a well-rounded, nicely made and packaged game worthy of God-ship. Humor, Drama, Action, Romance, Scenes that touch your soul: this game has it all. UAC Military Nightmare for the DS scores a: 10/10

- Original Ghoul vs Human, only 3 ghouls and 5 humans it was very awesome.
- Armageddon Invasion.
- Alandoguns.
- ZdoomWars at his begining, there were some bugs but the maps had very nice songs.
And a lot that I can't remember.

Doomsday of UAC. Looks shit compared to today's standards, but back in the mid 90's it was the single wad that got me interested in Doom modding.

RE: Your most nostalgic WADs! Come share the nostalgia?
The first thing I touched, involving online Doom entirely, was when I gave Final Doom: The Plutonia Experiment, a try on a ZDaemon co-operative server. Soon after, I gave another WAD a try, and that was Invasion U.A.C. with the addition of the DEHACKED edit known as "SuperGun".
Hell Revealed II survival was the first thing I touched back when I came around during the 97D days of Skulltag; played that insanely-fun WAD with 31 other players in hectic survival games, back when cooperative/survival games and classical deathmatches were what people mostly played, instead of the other mods nowadays. I'm not saying the present-day mods are terrible and whatnot, but I just miss the good ol'e days.
When it came around, it was all the more ridiculous, yet even more fun, with the earlier builds of Hard Doom thrown into the mix. (GOD DAMN THOSE RICTUSES.)
Aside from cooperative/survival, UDM3 and UDMX are my all-time favorites for competitive deathmatches. Regarding other competitives modes, Ghouls vs. Humans was the first TLMS conversion I played with others on, back when there were no maps released, and the mod was tested out on Dream Deathmatch maps instead. Ah... Creepers out of nowhere in the river in Canyon Oasis... good times, good times...
...that was also where I met a particular person who I gradually friended, even though they kept killing me... as a Cyborg. (*COUGHQENTCOUGH*)

RE: Your most nostalgic WADs! Come share the nostalgia?
I'm admittedly too young to actually be very nostalgic about most of this; but I have a few things to chip in:
VANILLA-STYLE WADS:
1. Momento Mori I's soundtrack - despite only being composed of 15 tracks (rather than MM2's full 32), I still love the Momento Mori soundtrack so much - and I still keep it in my midi packs (which I keep in my skins folder so I can switch out midis if I get annoyed at one that's playing in game), along with ROTT's, MM2's, HR2's, and a bunch of others.
2. TNT Evilution - I honestly like it more than I liked Plutonia - maps were more atmospheric, none of the fights were there seemingly for the sole purpose of difficulty, it DIDN'T USE REVENANTS ON EVERY SINGLE MAP EXCEPT MAP11 AND MAP17, and the maps felt like the places they were modeled after. It also was the precedent for extremely large maps - MAP20, MAP21 and MAP27, even if MAP21 was literally hell to navigate. I would love to see a modern take on TNT Evilution, if only because we've already seen two takes on Plutonia - Plutonia 2 and PRCP. Hurry up TNT2!
3. Hell Revealed I - I dunno, a lot of people say that it hasn't aged well which, being over a decade old, makes sense, but for me personally there's a certain "charm" that Hell Revealed I's levels have that Hell Revealed II's levels don't. I mean, most of the maps look like they were made in the 90's, but I can accept that because again, mapset is over a decade old AND it was the first *real* slaughterwad ever made.
4. Scythe I - Objectively speaking, Scythe II is way better - it looks better, fights are much better choreographed, individual levels are a lot more memorable - but I really like Scythe I for some reason - it's an interesting look at what Erik Alm did back in the day, and even if it isn't as polished as his wonderful sequel, I still find it a fantastic mapset in and of itself.
ZDOOM STYLE MODS:
1. Old Skulltag invasion - I don't know about everyone else, but I personally love a good invasion fight or two - even if the old skulltag invasion wasn't great, I still found it a lot of fun.
2. Armageddon2v63 invasion - of course, this completely and utterly blew ST invasion out of the water, for obvious reasons.
3. Stronghold - while stronghold isn't exactly an old mod (though, 2011 was 4 years ago), and it was very clunky and suffered from many issues, at the time, I was floored - completely jaw-dropped at some of the maps.
4. Samsara - while even newer (though it had a long development process), samsara was the mod that finally got me into doom modding - without it, I don't think I would've become part of the community in the same way. Plus, it's half the reason samsarahold exists (stronghold being the other half), so that's a plus.

I'll take Scythe 1 any day! Perfect little bite sized, cleanly designed maps that lead into massive slaughterfests at the very end. It's designed so damn well as to actually be a bit mind blowing - The difficulty curve just feels perfect. Individual maps from S1 stick out much clearer to me :)Untitled wrote: 4.
