I downloaded and installed zandorum so I could play the brutal doom mod, but now the installer keeps appearing on my desktop for no reason.
Furthermore, when I downloaded zandorum 2.0, my anti-virus recgonized it as a malicious file.
Is this supposed to happen?

I don't know where you downloaded this from, but Zandronum isn't supposed to be nor include malware.

I downloaded it from this website.
Norton Anti-Virus said that it recognized it as being a virus/malware because it had a very poor reputation within the Nortn AV community.

The feeling is mutual. Norton AV has a poor reputation in this community.
Also, Brutal Doom is fun, but it is not the only way to play Zandronum. Disregard Sgt Mark's bad advice and don't put it in your skins folder, or else you will not be able to play any other mod, and there are lots of other fun mods to play. Doomseeker comes bundled with Zandronum, and it can be used as a launcher to easily select what wads (and pk3s) to load.

It's probably a false positive:

Are you 100% sure you downloaded it from the site? Are you 100% sure you don't have a virus on your computer? Did you place the installer maybe in the startup folder? This is the first time I've ever heard of something like this.

Odd, maybe it's something on your end as this is a first time seeing this for me.
Blech, Norton. Norton has a bad history with me and my brother, who lost several game projects to it's "anti-virus" because of false positives.
I disrecommend it for all intents and purposes, it's also a resource hog. I use MalwareBytes instead, works and only keeps working as long as you leave it open.
