Because Doom is the single greatest PC game that has ever been created, and always will be. Enough said.

Doom is a boss game, I play it because it's awesome and continues growing with new mods and maps despite how old it is.

Because Doom rhymes with "boom"
Can you even imagine something more awesome than that?

because the new games are shitty, and still the only thing that I can run on my pentium II is zandronum, that has some shitty performance too using opengl over ati radeon 7200, but it's ok with software render.

Well, at least vanilla doom works fine

Because the fans of doom are *still* finding ways to completely reinvent the game so it stays fresh - seriously, I open up doom, and I have dozens of different experiences I could play.

Plus, how many games can say they've had literally thousands of maps created by their fans?

Pixelated, beautiful visuals and very fast/dynamic gameplay. NO LOADING. Launch and play, no stupid Steam window popup, no GamesforWlive, registration and all that commercial shit. Also you don't need to pay to play mods, if you know what I mean.

<---same goes for this character's game

Quite a few.

With consistent releases since 1995 though? I mean yeah there's HL1 mods and Super Mario hacks but they're far dwarfed by the sheer amount of mods and content (not just maps) that the Doom community has.

If a newbie who's never played a custom Doom mod/mapset were to start playing through every possible wad on just /idgames alone (excluding the Terry shit) it would probably take at least a year or two.

If we join the maps made for most famous games which have a great fanbase that made custom maps (Quake, Unreal Tournament, Half Life...)

The result of this sum doesn't even hit the amount we have for Doom, not even far.

Because it's still fun, fun has no expiration date. Easy to learn, hard to master (see: new mapsets and speedrunning). That and there's 21 year's worth of mods and maps to explore, and still more to look forward to. It becomes more than the sum of its parts. It can be easy to rack up hours just getting into some of the more extensive mapsets and mods out there, like DRLA+RPG.

Applies to the multiplayer too, to a lesser extent.

People love asking this question and my good boy Tenchu always has the right answer.

Doom is a legend. It's one of the greatest creations of humanity. Doom will never die, no matter how old it gets. Because even when I'm fucking 80 years old and nearing death, I will be blasting those motherfucking 80-damage fireball shooting Revenants with my super shotgun and teaching my grandkids how overpowered that weapon is.

When humanity colonizes Mars, if the video game can no longer be played for whatever reason, Doom players will keep their shotgun loaded, ready for whatever might come out of the shadows. And who knows, maybe one day bitches will try to mess with true teleportation and open a motherfucking portal to Hell. Or maybe they won't - but my grandkids will be there to tell their grandkids a story when they go to bed, and they will shit their fucking pants with it. Because Doom will never die.

Doom's been fueled by fans, modders, mappers, and communities (as sometimes shaky as they are). They all to this very day still enjoy a classic, a revolution in computer gaming, first-person games, and just a damn good time.

Whenever the inevitable comes, it'll be in too far in the future to tell. So there's no reason not to play it if you haven't.

(I will admit though strictly it's mods and maps keeping my interest, played through all the normal games too many fuckin' times to count)
