Added personality to the forums, what do you guys think?
Should make a bunch of screenshots of whats popular these days... (CTF, GvH, Duels, AoW, Complex, Zombie Horde, etc...)

In addition to showing "popular" mods, the Skulltag site also had screenshots of impressive in-progress projects and recent map releases, which was a great way for users to fairly advertise their work, reaching more eyes than just those lurking the project forums.
Unfortunately, users always ended up asking "who made this?" because there was no click-through link. It would be nice if clicking the picture opened up that project's thread in a new tab or something.

None of them really work because it doesn't show what the mod is about; players killing and zombies infecting.

This idea, would be awesome to have back in on the forums. I always liked the random pictures that appeared on the right hand corner :P

And it wouldn't even have to be maps, correct? It could be gameplay modifications. Personally, I like those the best since they actually bring forth new features and weaponry.
Anyways, I like this idea, it would make it easier for mods to get more well-known, in the case they aren't.

So what do you suggest, using real gameplay screenshots? I thought the real and only purpose of those pics was to show the beauty of the map architecture the way they could be seen on an empty server...

Yes, showing live gameplay. That's the whole point of this port, multiplayer.

Skulltag too was focused on MP, and yet all those shots were unpopulated. And it looked cooler than any picture with pack of noobs shoting each other's heads off would ever dream to look, imho.

I realized i should have posted some gameplay pictures too, but i was sleeping by then (posted those pictures rather late).
I will try to get some proper gameplay and hopefully some nice pictures through the demo.

I'm actually with CloudFlash on this one. I think it's kinda pointless and a bit messy showing in game screenshots. That's what videos are for. I do support this idea and I'd rather it be about the atmosphere and architecture of the mod.

I would be fine with showing maps. Some ZH maps have excellent degree of detailing.
Some pictures could be showing game action too.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few marines running around in the screenshots but having a big ugly psprite on the screen is quite a no-no IMO. :P

If you're going to take screenshots, don't forget these five commands:
Code: Select all
r_drawspectatingstring 0
togglemessages
png_gamma 1
cl_identifytarget 0
crosshair 0
The first one will hide the "spectating - press space to join" on the bottom of the screen, and the second one will turn off all frag, pickup, chat, etc. popup messages, which can also be toggled by pressing F8.
If you buffed up your gamma, the third command will prevent the screenshots from looking like absolute shit.
The fourth one will prevent the players' names from popping up when you face them.
The fifth one disables crosshairs.
If you want to revert these settings, just replace 0's with 1's and vice versa, except for crosshairs since it takes number from 0 to 7 or 8. To enable messages again, press F8 or type in console
togglemessages
More commands for opengl users:
Code: Select all
gl_light_ambient 20
gl_lights 1
gl_fogmode 1
These will make the maps look more fancy with dynamic lights and fog enabled, as well as having the sector light levels be nearly the same as the author of the map intended them to be.
There is one more setting which is optional, some maps look better with it and some look better without it:
Basically makes the dynamic lights "bigger" and "fuller."
This stuff is also good for recording trailers. Here is a good example of a trailer (Skulltag 97d trailer by Rivecoder):

That place is a already taken by Lord Igor, I'm afraid. If you want some gameplay, you guys should try putting some pretty vids at Zandronum's main page. Bet screenshots would look nice there too, duh.
