Brutal Doom: What's so good about it?

Yes. I've always wondered why there are so many 'fans' of this modification. I'd like to know why do you like it, what makes it your favourite (or one of your favourites) modifications.

I can't see anything good, so this is why I created this topic: to understand.

Anyone who doesn't like Brutal Doom, please, just pass by and ignore this thread which purpose isn't to start a flame war.

Hmm because it uses original doom sprites (some modified weapons but still almost the same as the original one), Monsters have a good difficult instead the old, slow, dumb A.I, you have gore (much more),....
I think, it's popular because the mod didn't changed nothing in looking aspects (no black cyberdemon, red imp, burning zombiemans...), it did more visual upgrades, + fatalities (who doesn't like it xD)

Advertising and word-of-mouth.

Many of the kiddies who play Brutal Doom 24/7 didn't even know that Doom mods existed before they saw a BD video on YouTube. Even sadder, some believed Brutal Doom was a standalone game.

Also, since it's hosted so often on servers, new players join it simply because there are players playing it. We saw the same effect with AOW2 in its hayday; regardless of how good something is, new players will flock to it simply because they want to play in a server with a high playercount because that's what they're used to in other online games.

To me, it feels slightly more fast-paced than vanilla. Though, anyone could easily make a game more fast pace. (I think?)

However, I don't like most of the changes it's made, like I think it makes the BFG9K able to kill its user, IIRC. That's extremely dumb, BTW.

Either way, though, there are better mods out there. This is only fun for like a few days to me, then I get bored and play some GVH or ZH. (or just play another game entirely)

That's exactly the opposite feeling I have. I feel the game is less fast paced with Brutal Doom, because you have to be way more careful to don't die in a split second and when you get heavily injured you're slowed.

It's also annoyingly popular by being hosted on ModDB, and being overhyped. Otherwise it's just an overkill gore and ear rape screaming mod.
Not to mention the slow motion executions... And the obstructive gore they leave behind.

Some reasons I like Brütal Doom:
- Interesting melee combat.
- Bonuses for killing in special ways.
- Useful starting weapon.
- Allies replacing blurspheres.
- Gore.
- Extra weapons from enemies.
- Faster former humans.
- Middle finger.
- No realm667 resources abuse. =P

Things I don't like:
- Lag.
- FPS drops.
- Extremely loud sound effects.
- BFG/Plasma self-damage.
- Plasma rifle reloading. (I kind of wish it could be reloaded while shooting =P)
- Yeah, the gameplay feels slower, somehow.

Its hype kinda of died I rarely see a brutal server with lots of players. It was simply one of the first to do what it did good, then it started to flock to a specific set of people while annoying a whole lot others -Aka good ol earrape marine and his nuke sound shotgun and rocket-

It doesn't deserve the hate it gets, it's not a bad mod, it's fun, people like it, so who cares?

Also Sgt. Mark getting banned from Zandronum was a terrible bandwagon and he should be unbanned if he isn't already.

I dunno. It's just a kind of a meh "enhancement" novelty mod that adds a ton of shit I never asked for. Rolling? ADS? Headshots that make even Barons trivial to kill? I admit the fatalities were pretty cool for the first while, but just got drawn-out and stale pretty quick. And that goddamn voice.

You could say "why don't you just not use those things", but I'd ask "then what does BD really offer besides those things" and it's pretty much just:
Image

Oh, and obscenely loud jelly squelching sounds whenever you shoot anything because blood works like that.
All in all it got popular among the mainstream mostly because of shock value and an effective Youtube and ModDB advertising campaign of pretty much "HEY GUYS, REMEMBER DOOM? IT'S BACK, MORE BRUTAL, HOW IT WAS MEANT TO BE". It did provide an attraction for new people simply by being so over-the-top and "EXTREME". Once the novelty wears off, what's left is a somewhat unimpressive gameplay mod that packs a lot of... clutter. What it does do, other mods I can think of can do it far better.

(ex. Project MSX is faster, flashier, melds modern and old better, is much more polished and quality-controlled, and has plenty of new mechanics that work to expand more options when fighting, ww-doomnukem and others also play great)

But hey, opinions

Its a mediocre mod that plays off the whole "DOOM BUT BETTER" thing and makes it loud, obnoxious, and excessive. it takes alot of the gameplay mechanics that make Doom what it is and breaks them by changing behaviors of enemies and weapons.
maps in doom are designed around the set of weapons in the game and layout of enemies. if you change the behavior of weps and enemies too much, it totally unbalances the game and makes it either too hard, too easy, or in some cases impossible.
making the environment objects destructable is cool though
also BLOODY SCREEN! SO REAL(ly annoying and distracting)

yeah! its not like he told anyone to kill themselves and provided them with links to get stuff to do so!

.......wait a second
Nothing.
Nothing is good about it.
Literally nothing.

It appeals strongly to a certain demographic. Which is not part of the Doom player base. But the same could be said of nearly every other popular mod out there. To quote Catastrophe, people like it so who cares? I also find the Mark ban to have been a clusterfuck bandwagon.

I'm tired of seeing these threads pop up. Cut it out already. It has nothing good, nothing. How many more times will these threads have to show up for everyone to realize this?

It was cool for a while like back in version 05 09 12 etc and stuff but after a while even the shock and awe factor gets really stale. The wad was really satisfying to kill things in at first, considering it had less stuff to compete with, and Mark's fiascos on the forums and stuff didn't really happen yet. The wad was also still growing in popularity and wasn't over-exploded like it is today. Fatalities were awesome when they first came out but only for a while did they keep their charm. Basically, this wad will draw you in if you like the extreme stuff it does, but after playing it for an extended amount of time, the mediocrity and flaws of it become very apparent, especially when compared with normal doom and other mods etc. It's probably funner for longer to people who don't have much experience with normal doom (like the flood of new people off youtube and stuff who haven't touched the original game).

btw I've played brutal doom for like 2 years since version 05 to like v16

Oh man, that's just... wow. People thought it was a standalone game?
Really... rather pathetic of those people.

I am not a fanboy of Sgt. Mark IV per se, but I do enjoy the mod. It's the gore, and the fact that the Doom graphics weren't too altered that it wasn't un-recognizable from vanilla. It's fast-paced and just what it's name implies: "Brutal".

Hell, even the author was brutal himself.

It's just nice to take a break from vanilla for a while. I'm not saying it's better than vanilla, and I'm sure of it that there are waaaay better gameplay altering mods out there.

"It's also annoyingly popular by being hosted on ModDB" my game is hpsted on modb and its not popular '-'
also project msx doesnt have doom guns and zombiemans were replaced by marines...
"I'm tired of seeing these threads pop up

..." I agree if it was a fan related thread, but it's not the case, so if you don't like it why waste your time opening this thread for just post that? :V
