Doom Client Preferences?

#1

Post by Armour » Sat Jul 13, 2013 12:21 pm

Mouselook? Crosshair? Movebob? Resolution? High or low mouse sensitivity? Fullscreen or Windowed?

What kind of settings do you prefer to use when you play on any Doom multiplayer-enabled client?

My settings:
Mouselook: Yes
Crosshair: Circle (Purple coloured)
Movebob: 0
Resolution: 1920x1080
Mouse Sensitivity 2.0, M_Yaw 0.6, M_Pitch 0.6, M_Forward 2.5, M_Side 2.5
Screensize: 8.0 (Options > Display Options > Hud Options > Screensize 8.0)
Cap Framerate: Yes (30 Fps)
Fullscreen: Yes
800 DPI

1280*1024 (monitor dimensions), OGL, mouse-look on by default, crosshair on (small cross), movebob 0, stillbob 0, fullscreen, mouse_sensitivity 1.1.

Angle crosshair, fullscreen with native resolution, jumping with Q and dropping with Backspace, rather slow mouselook, because fast one confuses me and hurts my eyes :p Autorun ofc on, mouselook ofc on, autoaim on on no mouselook servers and off on mouselook servers. Blood is only sprites because I hate particles of blood... Screen wiping is turned off, because it tends to terribly lag. Most setting are to make performance better, and are not a personal preference. If OpenGL, Legacy's light mode. I somehow prefer Software though.
Shared keys will now be in Zandro! Thanks devs for their work, and users for the support!

  • Mouselook - Both, I have a bind that turns it on/off for me at will, honestly depends on my mood.
  • Crosshair - Dot. If I get pissed, I get out my hax crosshair.
  • Movebob - 0, fuck bobbing.
  • Resolution - I forgot, but recently changed to widescreen. Before it was 800 x 600 (I highly recommend using that if you're competitive and don't have widescreen)
  • High or low mouse sensitivity - High, it really depends on your tic reaction. If you are the type that likes to spazz out a lot, then you should use low.
  • Fullscreen or Windowed - I play on windowed, but I maximize the screen. Pretty weird.
  • Software or OpenGL - Software forever, guaranteed smoothness regardless of what I'm running in the background. However if I am playing a mod that absolutely needs opengl like WhoDunIt, then I'm willing to switch.
  • Other - I downloaded that custom client with weapon preferences. So for preferences I have it set like this:
    1. BFG9000
    2. Plasma Rifle
    3. Super Shotgun
    4. Rocket Launcher
    5. Chaingun
    6. Shotgun
    7. Pistol
    8. Chainsaw
    9. Fist
Some helpful compatflags?
cl_showweapnameoncycle - This is easily the most poorly named compat flag I have ever seen. What it does is it shows the name of the weapon you are going to switch to. So if you are scrolling through weapons really fast in a tight situation, this really helps.

cl_respawnonfire - This stops you from being respawned when pressing the "fire" key, instead you gotta press the spacebar. Why is this good? Imagine having one of those intense duels where you are literally raping the fire button just to kill someone, next thing you know your opponent has the bfg and you don't want to respawn, and whaddya know your natural instinct made you hit fire and poof! You're back in the game only to be gibbed.

r_drawplayersprites - This is a really weird flag. It will toggle the rendering of your weapon on/off, but you have to set it up in every map so have a bind. If you've played quake 2, I'm sure you can recall some demos where players are firing from invisible guns, well this is the same thing. Good if you think weapon sprites get in the way of your aiming.

cl_ticsperupdate - Set this to 1 at all costs. This really helps when you have those pesky ssg shots that mysteriously go through people without harming them.

Oh yes mighty old bluewizard, your wisdom is spot-on as always. *bows bows*

Anywhos, my settings aren't that different but I guess I did tweak a few things to my likings? I don't recall doing anything involving toggling stuff, but I do remember trying out that "invisible weapon" thing before on doom since I did it before with quake lol.

Mouselook: on
Crosshair: dot
mouse_sensitivity: 1.1
ogl: recently switched permanently to software
resolution: 1360x768 fullscreen (not 1366x768 due to screenshot bug)
auto aim: on in pvp, off in cooperative modes (i have a bind to toggle it)
movebob: 1.0
sr50: yes

I have like tons of random alias commands in the console (used to have more in st) and a large number of keys on my keyboard are cheat binds because I do so much mod testing

Mouselook: on
crosshair: plus, changes color with health
mouse sensitivity: 0.8
renderer: software usually; I'm able to use opengl but I think software generally looks nicer

rocket trails off (I would like to turn off all zandronum added translucency too -- translucent lost souls don't make any sense and I think the plasma balls look better opaque)

resolution: 1024x768 windowed (fullscreen makes my computer monitor flicker uncomfortably on exit and it takes a few seconds to get out of it, so I avoid it on all games if possible; also I'm usually tweaking the server or maps when I'm playing)

autoaim: off
weapon switch: none
cl_respawnonfire: false
movebob: standard
Controls: Arrow keys + (left handed) mouse, jump with right click if the server doesn't have weapons with alt fire

Other binds:

resurrect: backspace
q: drop weapon
i: the "spawn stuff" button, I very rarely use it for anything so I won't hit it by accident

Mouse look: on
Resolution: 1920x1080 fullscreen, software mode only with capped frame rate. Though if something requires ogl..I'll switch.
Crosshair: custom
Mouse Sensitivity: currently .5
Move_bob: 0

I lowered the corpse count, turned off trails, and decals since PRO's days of playing chillax.
No weapon switch. Auto aim is on. Sr50 buttons are bound to Q and E. I have a bunch of team chat binds and combat based binds as well.

Mouselook? - None, I use look up/down as comfortable alternative.
Crosshair? - None, It messed with my aim back in the day.
Movebob? - Nah, It's nice but get's old pretty fast. Also more comfortable with it off.
Resolution? - 640x480
High or low mouse sensitivity? - High, ZD's sensitivity is slightly lower.
Fullscreen or Windowed? Windowed, it's what I used since I began playing in 06

Other stuff, max decals is 0 on both ports, bullet puffs is off on ZD, SR50 activation is on mouse2, sfx is higher than the music [almost max because I like my ear drums].

  • Mouselook - On unless in an oldschool server
  • Crosshair - Boldcross. I use a similar one in Quake and TF2 too, so...
  • Movebob - 0.01
  • Resolution - 1440x900, 60Hz
  • High or low mouse sensitivity - Midrange? I never knew what qualified as "high" but I keep it at 4.5"/360° (2 spins across 9" mousepad) in shooters
  • Fullscreen or Windowed - Fullscreen, why anything else
  • Software or OpenGL - GL, I've gotten used to it. I don't like how software greys everything up past a certain distance.
  • GL Settings - No texture filtering w/ mipmapping, 4x aniso, capped FPS, Doom lighting mode, dynamic lights off most of the time
  • Special Binds - From PowerStart config.

Oh yeah, and if you're new to PC FPS, make sure to force off vsync and triple-buffering, just to be safe. They can lag up your controls and kill your response time. Look it up. I'd recommend a framelimiter in place of vsync for tear and fps control without the downsides of vsync.

mouselook - yes
m_pitch 1
m_side 2.5
m_yaw 0.8
mouse_sensitivity 0.6

800x600 resolution screen
no movebob
as an added assist, I mapped the 'use' button to my mouse2, easier to hit switches on the go when in a tight spot. and a mouse button on the side for sr50

opengl - when you play competitively this video render is practically irrelevant

Movebob - 0, fuck bobbing.

High or low mouse sensitivity - High, it really depends on your tic reaction. If you are the type that likes to spazz out a lot, then you should use low.
Fullscreen or Windowed - I play on windowed, but I maximize the screen. Pretty weird.
Software or OpenGL - Software forever, guaranteed smoothness regardless of what I'm running in the background. However if I am playing a mod that absolutely needs opengl like WhoDunIt, then I'm willing to switch.
Other - I downloaded that custom client with weapon preferences.

Yes; No; Yes; 800x600; very high (turns by 270 degrees if I move my mouse from side to side on mousepad); fullscreen.
Medicris wrote: Oh yeah, and if you're new to PC FPS, make sure to force off vsync or triple-buffering. They'll make your controls feel laggier and kill your response time to everything.
tl;dr version: you're a newbie and spread heresy.
I don't know about triple-buffering (that thing is old as fuck, probably even older than it), but you should never disable vsync unless you use OpenGL (in OpenGL, your videocard will always force you to vsync and you can't disable that setting fortunately). Seriously, force vsync to off only if you like to see two frames simultaneously divided by diagonal line: one frame, previous, in bottom-right corner and current frame in top-left corner. If you don't get this after disabling vsync (in software mode) then your videocard still does it for you :)

And by the way. Yes, there's such thing in Zandronum as "uncapped FPS". It's cool. Now you can have >35 FPS but your controls will be always capped to 35 FPS due to the fact that engine still continues to work at 35 FPS. Turning "uncapped FPS" on will cause the controls lag you mentioned, since you see everything in, say, 80 FPS, click, and your click does absolutely nothing until the next real game tic: in worst case it will start firing in 28ms after you clicked. Also there's funny mouse effect in software renderer with uncapped FPS, caused by same thing.

cl_capfps 1.
