Questions about the future Zandronum possibilities.

#1

Post by PVDHP » Mon Apr 22, 2013 12:43 pm

Howdy from Russia, guys! It's really cool that Zandronum going better and better. But I have some questions.

1) Is Zandronum will support a 3D maps instead of crappy 2.5d wads? Yes I have already made some maps with 3d floors but it's really not enough.

2) Is Zandronum will support multilayered textures such as color map, normal map and light trace?

Thanks for attention
Vadim

The whole engine is built for the 2.5 rendering, maybe you can make a huge .md2 file level, like a quake map (though I doubt it). Not sure about the texture question.

Probably not to both. In any case, you would see such features in ZDoom first.

3D maps would require a huge rewrite of not only the map code, but also anything that uses BSP at all. Safe to say it isn't happening. Also, software renderer.

Specmaps, bump maps, normal maps, etc, are also very unlikely to happen. Software renderer, anyone?

IDK if other ports like vavoom or doomsday can do the things you wanted OP, but you may want to check them out.

Doomsday definitely does not support advanced map formats. Infact, it doesn't support anything except vanilla format. It's just a fancy Doom2 with support for hires textures, 3D models, jumping, free look, and dynamic lights.

Vavoom use a Quake like render (3D maps :D)
But still limited to BSP with 3D floors '-'

Theoretically, yes. But nothing would be solid. You'd fall through everything.

Why not only use md2/3 not for all the map but only some parts like avoiding use of complex 3D floors/sloops for doing houses, and other details?
You ´ll need some map vertices to run the mod :B and I think it would be a problem to render all the map as a model

Why don't you try Sauerbraten? It sounds like you have little interest in Doom-style maps.

I was annoyed enough when 3D floor support came around >.<

Faking 3D was one of the challenges that came with mapping

Doom modding is cool, the only limitation is the room over room =/
Someday I think someone´ll do a 3D sector :D (It would be like a portal, but you could pass by it and not just a render ilusion)

My comment was directed at the OP. Sorry if that wasn't obvious.
