Competition idea [gauging interest]

How many players/groups/clans would be interested in a dynamic world tournament? What I mean by this is more of a territory control theme, where players, groups and clans battle it out over territories on a map [consisting of playable maps] for total domination. It would probably have hard and fast rules and timelines to make sure it doesn't drag out forever. I have an idea in the works but I would hate to flesh it out and have like 2 signups.

So you mean something like Planetside? I would be very interested in something like that.

Epic idea for sure, definitely possible here.
Would you do it clan based? Or country based? Or custom team based?
What game mode? TDM? CTF?
From there we can get some epic shit rolling

If this is for Zandronum only... maybe the other team games could be considered?

I think I was kinda vague in the description. I don't mean a custom map or game mode, but good ol' 1v1 battles for control of territories/maps. It's an idea I've never seen done before in Doom and am kind of interested in executing it.

It'd be good cos it would force a player or team to be consistent, would you draw up a map or just have a grid or something?

Probably a hex grid with each map occupying a certain hex. Would need a large amount of maps. Maybe Duel32-based.

depending on the rules, this could be very engaging. I think it would be neat if there was also some strategy beyond in-game play. A few more deciding factors than simply win/lose would be nice. just an example: if group/clans are big enough, holding a few of the matches simultaneously (2-3 servers) would force the clan to split themselves up methodically. So match 04 would actually be match 04a and 04b
Should there be a wadset to accompany this? If the rules and conditions seem promising I'll be glad to work on some maps. You could assign a (known or new) map to its own vacant region.
Also, consider changing the gametype to match the event/struggle. For example, those who are invading land would probably have a primarily offensive role. Just a thought
It would require a lot of work, but your idea would rake in a lot of popularity for z& if executed properly
additional rubbish / illustrated brainstorming:
just used now defunct clans as example.
Edit: Here's a reductionist approach rather than the holistic one above. A take over would require the state capital be reached through a series of small-scale games surrounding. If a majority or maybe 50/50 something is won, the *true* large-scale skirmish can begin. Obviously the world map here would be "smaller"
Edit 2: I felt like transgressing a lil, don't take this one too seriously either

Another cool idea:
Make different maps be worth a different amount of points. Example: Judas = 10 points, Dweller = 8 points, Brit10 = 15 points, GW20 = 12 points, etc.
If the gamemode is intended to be Duel, that is. Which is what I assume you meant by "1v1".

Now what would be the coolest part would be if you could set up actual servers with this and let people battle it out whenever they wanted with an automatic system...
IE. You wake up and find out that clan XYZ just took half of the north side while you were asleep, because they fought a bunch of different clans.

I was thinking of that! Like storing the strings (or account identification numbers, if/when that's implemented *wink wink*) of the players who win each round/duel, then manipulating those later.

You could do something as a round robin first come first serve business.
Each team/country gets a random generated number between 1-32, that team/country gets put in a list and must decide which map they wish to represent as their starting 'territory'. From there, if there are any remaining maps that are neutral, teams/countries can challenge other teams/countries to a duel on it to gain control. With the first called territory acting as 'home' there could be special conditions that have to be met before that territory can be considered taken, perhaps a 1v1 match against every player in the team/country? Of course I'm thinking only about 3 people per team, if it's more then it might just be reduced to 2 matches only.
In any case I support this idea and can't wait to see it in fruition.

More food for thought:
Who should be allowed to run servers for this kind of system? Only reputable hosts like Funcrusher, BE, Grandvoid...etc?
