For the love of Doom on Facebook.

Hey girls and guys and those that may be in the middle.
There is a new page on Facebook that combines news updates for both Zdaemon and Zandronum! Games, SNS and such other event reminders will be posted daily to spread the word of Doom. The page promotes multiplayer doom as a whole and does not necessarily promote Zdaemon or Zandronum, so join in to have an eye on the whole multiplayer picture! Requests to showcase projects or wanted help are accepted.

Invite your friends and we hope to see you on Facebook.

Would it be better to separate the two instead of combining them?

As I said this doesn't promote any source port in partciular. It's just that Zandro and Zdaemon are the most dominant ports, and presenting them as a whole allows people to join the multiplayer experience. As for odamex, its a bit underpopulated D:

The whole point of promotion is populating. You did say you're not promoting any particular source port, but you're excluding one.
You're populating two ports that are already populated.
Why not populate the underpopulated port.
You're stupid.

Because newcomers will totally stick around when they find that the port they spent time and effort (however minimal) setting up has a total of 2! people playing.
Yeah.. No. First impressions are vital, and Odamex quite honestly doesn't give one.
We can worry about properly representing all ports once the average playercount in the entire online doom community is no longer below 100.
But until then, putting Odamex up there might even hurt this effort in getting fresh blood into the community!

It would be better to show newcomers that there is a choice between solid ports and communities.
90 people actively playing (
right now, a friday afternoon) across all the online ports is not really what most people would define as a 'solid' community.
Decay wrote:Excluding odamex is simply silly. Just because there is not an active player count in the servers all the time does not mean nobody plays the port.
It means ALMOST nobody plays the port, and that's just as bad considering that DooM - which is STILL a commercial investment on it's own - has to compete with every FPS, free or otherwise, released in the last 19 years!
Again, first impressions count. Making sure that newcomers can find a server with PEOPLE ON IT on their first visit is a good way to make them come back for more.

I don't think my intelligence has to come in to this, does it?

I don't see why you have to exclude odamex. Your arguments are pretty petty and pointless. Like Naut says, you need to promote to populate.
Rather than throwing an ad hominem, try explaining what's pointless about factual observations.
You can promote something all you want, but it won't populate unless it has something outside people want: improvements or other people.

My point exactly.

Hey Jes why are you such a racist to odamex, did odamex burn down your treehouse? Come on man, don't be such a fuhrer and include odamex, you don't want to look like a zandronum supremacist but I would not be surprised if you were one.
Now seriously, as Decay said, why not support odamex? Zandronum, Zdaemon they are all same, multiplayer ports for an old game, splitting hairs with the fanbase is just not gonna work. We are meant to be an united community not a bunch of hair-splitters. No offense intended towards you Jes.

Is this supposed to be funny? Cyclonix is long dead, Odamex is not. In any case, I'd say for the sake of fairness odamex should be adverstized as well but I don't run that facebook page so it's up to whoever does.
Then again last I checked doomworld adverstizes zdaemon/odamex and not zandronum :"[

Why aren't you supporting Cyclonix, hmm?! Oh, it's dead, so it's alright to ignore that port.
I suggest you re-read my post. You don't appear to get the message. Hint, FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT, hint.
Oh, and if you're supposed to be a spokesperson for Odamex, then you're actually part of the population problem that port has.
Again, FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT, and you're a bad one.

Yo, cut it out, this topic isn't about odamex, if the page admin wants to add it, good, otherwise OH WELL
As for yourself Jes, are you one of the admins for that facebook page? If not, why the hell are you against adverstisements of odamex on there? How would that even affect you in the slightest? inb4 "because newcomers would be confused as to what to pick!" That'd be their choice. Personally I hope they'll come here but that's just me. Then again >facebook.

I see where this is going, and I what I said sounds a bit unfair I could say. I stated that I would not promote any particular source port and focus on multiplayer doom as a whole, but yet I have chosen to leave Odamex out, which counteracts my main point. However, considering what Jes said, and considering that I have almost close to zero personal experience with Odamex, I would have insufficient info about the port to help run a page about it.
In the end, considering again that the page is to promote multiplayer doom, I will consider adding Odamex and will try to follow up on it, if that's really what the players want.

Okay. How about "most odamex players have a life, so they can't be playing 24/7 like zandronum kiddie corner"?
Or how about promoting an actual "Doom" port instead of quake rip-offs?
It also definitely has the best community, given that most of the players are much older and is much friendlier to newer players than the assholes featured here!
It also definitely has the best community
Hmmm..
Decay wrote:'no life', 'kiddie corner', 'ripoff', 'assholes'
Alter wrote:'racist', 'ad hominem', 'nazi', 'supremacist', 'guilty until proven otherwise'
Please, explain to me which of these two parts I - the relatively new guy around the online doom community - am supposed to believe?
..Moving on..

I'm against shooting ourselves in the proverbial foot by telling them "try this or this or this one of these umpteenth ports" instead of just saying "come play here, there's people around!".
At least, when they've decided to stay after meeting OTHER PLAYERS, we can tell them "hey, if you like this or dislike that, there's also these ports, they're pretty cool too!"
Dynamo wrote:

And that's the attitude that won't get online doom any newcomers.
"Are they confused? Their problem."
No, it really isn't, it's OUR problem. It's not about Odamex or Zandro or ZDaemon or Chocolate(of all things), it's about getting newcomers to STAY. They do that better when there's other people around.
It affects me, because hey, guess what.. I like playing online with other players. Zandronum barely achieves that, now imagine how badly the rest are doing.

Updated page. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Odamex, I have considered what you said and will work towards it.

Think for yourself. Don't feel pressured into including something just because there are people who will be butthurt if you don't. You don't have to be politically correct.
Odamex is a good port. Most competitive players seem to choose it nowadays. However, the hard numbers (playerbase population) still make it a minority in terms of online Dooming as a whole, and therefore I don't really think Odamex players should be offended if the name of their port isn't included on a Facebook page geared towards average online Doom players.

No its fine :P
I like a little feedback. I actually wanted to call the page Odamex, Zandronum and Zdaemon at the start, but then I felt Odamex was a bit dead and reacessed the situation. This thread reminded me that it is actually not dead, and that many Doom gods as we know them still populate the classic doom port.

Odamex definitely isn't dead, it just doesn't have large a community of its own. (Although it does seem to have a somewhat active forum.) To my knowledge, most Odamex players are from the already-existent IDL and AltDeath communities.
