Chat bubble is neat, but.. this is going to stay as my default replacement.

How about only a chat bubble like Strikerman's one, but without the text in it?

Be careful when using Doom resources in new graphics, could be a licensing mess.
You're lucky that the SHAWN textures are mostly edited gradients so you don't have to change that, but anyone uses base Doom resources needs to be careful
Sometimes getting the Freedoom equivalent of the texture is better than just grabbing from Doom, there's tons of decent stuff in there that's on par with Doom's stuff, just something to keep in mind
EDIT: Since I've been getting questions about this, I'm mostly talking about stock content specifically in Zandronum, but it's also wise to use Freedoom content in your own stuff as opposed to using Doom textures, just becase you can use those with credit as a better option :)
Modified Doom textures apparently are okay to use with Doom projects, but only for those, from what I've heard id software say in the past about Doom wads/mods

But honestly, that bubble is
alright, but seriously. It's so damn flat. Holy shit.

Demonic Announcer is just great, even better than 97D probably. As for chat bubble don't you think it's better not to change it at all. Text and green color would just distract your eyes, especially on green layout maps.

I suggest that the chat and the console bubbles can have their icon depending on the loaded IWAD. This is perfectly legal and looks good imho. Just take a look at the new zdoom menu cursor: it can be the bunny for the doom games, the X of hexen for hexen, the sigil for strife, etc...

I don't really like the look of the green chat bubble; it looks amateurish to me, and the Doom font in it is really cliche and unattractive. Also, the alpha-blended drop shadow will break badly in software mode.
A simple white talk bubble, maybe with ... written inside it, should do the job and be more immediately legible.

It renders fine in software, actually. At least for me. The drop shadow doesn't render at all since it is very transparent. (Anything under a certain Alpha Value gets cut.)
Also, I used the Doom font, because that is the chat font. Seems like people often forget this is still Doom. I'm just looking for consistency.
(Also, I personally don't understand what is so bad about the Doom Font, other than just another thing for people to bitch and nitpick about for no real, legitimate reason.)

Cleaned up the border, added shawn2-texture to it, added black compblue texture to inner screen. IMO it's a bit more fitting to our space theme this way. :)
While it looks fine, and is a bit cleaner, I think it's also a little too plain on the border now. I may make some edits to that if you don't mind.

Thanks. By the way, I think the old chat bubble was made by Carn, so I don't think it would be a good idea to keep that.
