Doomguy's real speed

#1

"Doomguy runs at roughly 57 mph" (91.72kph)

Does anybody know where this number comes from? I've just made a few computations and it seems that this number is not true. Considering it gives the doomguy's speed with the autorun on but without the speedhacks like straferun or wallrun (or even nastier stuff).
Consider this: an average male shoulder with is 0.5 meters. Sprite of the doomguy is 32x56. I've set up a test from which I computed the doom relative speed of the doomguy. Its 2304 units per 141 tics. Considering 35 tics ~ 1 second, we can round this number to 4.02 seconds. If we put 32 ~ 0.5 meter then the doomguy's speed would be: 32.22kph ~ 20.02 mph. But this computation has a few problems. First off, the marine wears a thick armor and second, if his shoulder width with armor would be half of the meter, then he would be tall less than a meter.

Ok, let's consider something else. According to the doom bible, 4 main protagonists have heights: 5'10", 5'9", 5'11", 5'6". Average height is 5'9" ~ 179.832 centimeters. 1 meter equals to 31 units. With that numbers, the speed is 66.276 kph ~ 41.19 mph. This is not even close!

But hey, there is still a third option. There was a fifth character with the height of 6'2". According to some sources, this character has appearance the most similar to the one of the doomguy. With his height, 1 meter equals to 29.63 units and the running speed is... hold on... 69.63 kph ~ 43.27 mph! Not close enough...

What do you think? What is the real speed of the doomguy?

Since Usain Bolt's top speed is close to 32 mph (51.5 kph), I would say either his boots help him achieve that speed or he is in pretty good shape!

Maybe it's all the running from monsters and zombies

That's right.

Zanrun used to have a speedometer which mesured your speed in mph, and the top speed (with SR50) sorta matches up with those numbers. Isn't Zandro a little too fast in comparison though?

Where you get that info from?
The fastest human footspeed is 44.72 km/h (27.79 mph) apparently.

The scale is all over the place in Doom, according to Carmack 32 units was meant to be a meter, even though it seems far closer to a foot. I believe the 57 mph calculation was made with this info in mind.

With the 1 meter = 31 units, the speed should be even higher. But it isn't. The only explanation for this phenomena are the speedhacks, otherwise my ACS was counting too fast, but I don't think this is the case since I counted seconds in my head and the result is the same.

Give Doomguy a RedBull to boost up his speed.

The speedometer I used is actually from cyber-runner and it was made by ijon, I don't actually know how accurate it is, you'd have to ask ijon.
