I might donate like a dollar or something. Iunno every time they do these fundraising campaigns everything seems to be fine within 2 weeks. I think I've only ever seen Wikipedia go offline once and that was years ago.
I like that they don't have any ads but I'd honestly be okay with just one sidebar banner as long as it doesn't play sound or fucking EXPAND WHEN YOU ACCIDENTALLY MOVE YOUR MOUSE OVER IT

Well, I wouldn't graduate my kindergarten if not for Wikipedia's help... so I guess I owe them

Let's be real - any student ever owes them big time.

I feel like they run out of money way more than once a year even though the campaign usually says they'd be set for the year... Why?

Using Wikipedia in my college as a citation was and is an automatic F

Assuming students only use wikipedia to write essays.

I had an actually insane professor once give us a huge Wikipedia printout as a handout one class.
It's still weird to me, 3 and a half years later

I wouldn't even mind a banner or two as long as it helps them out/delays the need for fundraising, this happens every year. I might throw them 10 or 20 bucks out of goodwill anyway.

I'm not donating to a service that I expect to be free and funded by the government. I mean, c'mon, really? Asking us for money. How lame.
And really, as if it's ever going to go down. It's too valuable for it to go down forever.

Except if it was funded by the government then legitimate criticisms and bad history would be toned down. It's best to use a third party that's as unbiased as possible.

I thought being funded by governments is exactly what Wikipedia tries to avoid, therefore asking for donations...

The reason why they probably have these donations so often is because not enough people donate in the first place.

I recall reading something about some related branch of Wikipedia (probably Wikimedia?) being
very extravagant with what they spend their money on, so I doubt that it is just that.
Server costs are not extremely high these days, even if it is an extremely popular website.

For those that are interested

So what exactly are they spending their servers on?

No not really. Hell can just put up a non-obnoxious ad banner somewhere.

Images, video and audio are quite a load I'd imagine.

Does anyone pay attention to any of those? Wikia sites use youtube for videos anyway. When was the last time anyone used audio for wikipedia information?

I believe they have at least hundreds of hours of film on the wikimedia server, even feature length films such as -

Why? Just read the subject and put the documentaries on youtube. Done. I saved pentabytes of space.
