Edit:
It depends what map and mod you're playing but generally speaking yes GZDoom's OpenGL renderer is far better optimized than Zan, if that's the answer you were looking for.

I don't know what you mean by "runs on a 30 FPS".

I'm pretty sure if Zandronum ran at 15FPS none of us would use it. You're pulling these numbers out of your ass

I also heard a lot of people can't even run the newer gzdoom versions without a gpu upgrade.

fixed.

It's "nice" when your 2004-2008 GPU couldn't run a 1994 year game, but it can run even Call of Duty 4 MW 1-2, lol.

You probably heard this already, but maybe try updating your drivers?

The newer versions of gzDoom didn't work for me at first either (HOMs everywhere) but after I updated my driver gzDoom worked okay.

My (nVidia) GPU's from around 2010, though.

It's not possible, because my old AGP video card is totally stuck at GL 2.*, and GL 3 was released in 2008. It's interesting that the last AGP videocard was in 2007.
Should I buy a new PC to play a doom port that doesn't have even simple shadows and shaders (like bloom)?

And my pc isn't all that poor:

I think the framerate would be highter if wasn't by my GPU being a mentally disabled AMD.[/spoiler]

is it because they lack the neccesary openGL version support?

GZDoom's OpenGL renderer is more advanced than Zandronum's and is capable of processing more at a higher FPS. It also requires more demanding hardware and can't be run by as many people.
If you want to run a test comparison, do what ARGENTVM suggested and use the consolecommand vid_fps 1 while running the same mods on the same scenes.

As for superior, the two do entirely different things. Zandronum focuses on the multiplayer front, while GZDoom focuses on the singleplayer/feature front, and in both of those they are superior at their respective thing.
Zandronum is not very good for singleplayer, GZDoom is decisively not good for netplay.

I've also noticed that gzdoom actually uses your gpu, unlike zandronum. (maybe this is just me but zandro does use a lot of cpu)

Okay. Most of you are forgetting that Zandronum's current stable build is using an ancient OpenGL renderer engine from GZDoom that is years old, whereas GZDoom's current developments has greatly optimized the renderer engine. This discussion is an out right farce.

Doesn't Zandronum 3.0 catch up with a much later version of GZDoom (if not nearly current)?

Zandronum 3.0 catches up with the latest stable build of GZDoom. But there have been many more github updates of GZDoom since then, the latest stable build is actually...two, three years ago?

That's what they call cpubound, what the new gzdoom build has is to use the latest opengl codes to speed up the data transfer from cpu to gpu, and zandronum uses an old gzdoom render code, so the cpu does more drawcalls (I think that's the name) compared to gzdoom.
So, it can't use the gpu at all if all the information are coming too slow.

and since it's a BSP engine, lowering your resolution will help alot increasing your fps.

It will be when we'll have the newer zdoom version.
