Co-livestreaming doom

#1

Post by Dancso » Sat Oct 03, 2015 6:40 pm

Hey folks!

A friend (3Dfx) and I are planning to occasionally do a co-hosted livestream on twitch.

We're not all too serious about producing quality content, but we did manage to achieve a pretty fancy setup in which both our screens are (mostly) in sync on one stream.

See how it looks:

(this is merely a test screen)

3Dfx had come up with an ingenious plan to slice our statusbars up and throw them on the side. This way we gain a bit of vertical worldspace for the viewers.
This effect is achieved via Chromakey and a customized statusbar.

God knows what will happen if we decide to throw our mugshots into the mix with webcams

What are we playing

We mostly prefer competitive game modes, however due to a shortage of that we may well stream some survival games from time to time.

It may be worth noting that we ARE talking on the stream, but at the moment we're not really shooting (excuse the pun) to do amazing commentary. You're free to laugh at my silly accent though!

The livestreams go up on 3Dfx's channel called Wychwood TV, follow him if you'd like to recieve notifications of when we go live:

In case anyone's interested in how all this is done:

We use OBS to stream to 3Dfx's PC which is running an RTMP server app called "nginx" which then forwards it to his secondary PC that plays both our streams and composes the final image for twitch. Coincidentally our streams end up mostly synchronized (up to half a second difference but we've had it perfect before), considering my stream has to travel through half of Europe that's pretty lucky I'd say.

If you'd like more intricate details of our setup, feel free to ask!

We've had a test stream last thursday night (europe time), although we didn't really score more than 1-2 viewers, we did however manage to get an IDL CTF server going out of thin air!

At the moment we operate arbitrarily, so unless there was a huge interest (not likely) we'll probably just stream on random occasions (and may even abandon the idea after a few times), though it's safe to say it'll always be around 19:00-midnight GMT-0 times.

Still, we think it is/was a cool project to pull off, if any of you are interested in tuning in or helping us get competetive games going by actually playing with us, let us know!

Always nice to see people livestream some games, I'll try to make a visit sometime.

This sounds great. We need more people doing this too, maybe for community events someday?

I was going to say, "nginx as an RTMP server? What?" but then I realised you can do anything with nginx modules.
