What is this writing?

Some time ago, I was in possession of this (short?)sword that my dad found buried at his work (he landscapes in a nearby town.) I'm not exactly sure what the symbols on this mean. Are they runes? Chinese symbols? Random designs?

It's not really important that I find out what these symbols mean, but it would be cool to know. (if it's any help, they were found here in California)

who says its a replica? who is to say that the events in lord of the rings didn't happen and that is actually the sword used?

the world may never know
