Do YOU think that Doom is the single greatest video game ever created?

Obviously no, there are many more games that have gameplay, graphics, plot and about everything else way better than Doom. I play Doom because I like oldschool games - of course, I also do play other games when I'm tired of '2.5D blocks shooting other 2.5D blocks'

As stated above, not the "greatest", but it's still good. Don't get me wrong, but Doom hasn't aged as well to me as it might to others. Many, many other games grab my fancy and keep my interest so much easier.

EDIT: I mean really, Doom lacks things I like in many games even others had back then; a real damn plot, a character that isn't known for his body count, music that doesn't get old so fast and makes you want to play other music over it, a better level formula than "find certain color key, go to certain color door and get next certain color key, etc", much better presentation, depth, more re-playability, less predictable enemies, and much more in general. Doom isn't bad, it's just not the greatest IMO.

Who cares about graphics when we're talking about an 1993 videogame.

In my opinion, it is. After over 20 years, Doom is still being played and developed as a great game. Of course, graphics and gameplay aren't as good as modern games these days, but look at the opportunities we still have with this engine. We could replica any game with a bit of effort, making graphics and gameplay as great as modern games. Just look at Total chaos and DoomCenterΛdvance2.

That shit was to PC as Mario was to the NES, as Tetris was to the Gameboy, etc.

People opinion won't change anything it is one of the greatest fps just because it managed to survive all this time. People are probably just sick of stock maps and not the game itself.

Although tbh, I'd say doom1 didn't age as well as doom2.
If doom was a confusing rpg with fps elements I'd have abandonded it years ago.

IMO it's really really good, comes close to being greatest, so I voted yes. But IMO I enjoy playing Build engine games more, specifically Blood.

No game is the single greatest game of all time, for the future brings new fishes to the ocean - and due to how specific the claim of being "the greatest" is it is intrinsically subjective.
Thus the answer is no.

That said, I still voted yes. Because Doom is amazing, even with the now noticable cracks in the walls.

And all of this can be solved with modding.
But core game only, yeah I do agree with you but it's 1993 for god's sake. They still had dial-up at the time.

On-Topic: As many others said it already, there is no such thing as "Best Video Game", but calling it great for what it did and what can be done with it, yeah sure.

It holds significant value to the history of games but Doom is maybe #3 or #4 on the greatest list of video games with wolfenstien being above that and Super Mario bros above that and maybe Pong at the very top of the list. Doom is one to the greatest but not THE greatest.

Also yes, without question. Plenty of people still love it after 20 years. It can be a good stress reliever mowing down countless hordes of hellspawn through a giant variety of maps and gameplay modifications.
