Correct.

Note though, that the text 'there was one book' typically puts emphasis on the amount of books being 'one',
While the text 'there was a book' places emphasis on the book itself.

Of course, the latter requires you to understand articles. (a, an, the)

Also:
Jane's = Belongs to Jane
Janes = There is more than one Jane
Janes' = Belongs to a person named Janes, or belongs to more people by the name of Jane. It's incorrect to write Janes's because the name ends with an "s". Though that form might be accepted somehwere nowadays, it sure as hell was wrong in elementary school english class when I was learning this.

Keep this in mind or you will meet you're doom.

Ironically, I observe the words on Konda's picture being used incorrectly mostly by English native speakers, shrug.

SORRY FOR MEGA BUMP!

I am working on a little survival game which includes the possibility to starve to death. The problem is that your "hunger" is displayed like this:

Code: Select all

Hunger: 100%
100% might mean either that you are not hungry at all or that you're starving.

Does anyone know a better word for this?
Saturation?
Satiation?
Satiety?
(Anything else)?

Thanks. :)

Why don't you use 100 - percentage to represent hunger? That's more straightforward than even saturation tbh.

Howbout "Nutrition" and have it slowly decrease from 100% until you find food.

You mean so that "Hunger: 100%" = starving?
Ænima wrote: Howbout "Nutrition" and have it slowly decrease from 100% until you find food.
Maybe, but IMO it sounds a little strange due to the meaning of the word.

Whichever way you use Hunger will cause confusion, but there is no way to avoid that, and the confusion will be short-lived because players will figure it out soon enough.

I don't usually say or type this word, but I will make an exception just this once. "Fucking" means having sex. Any other usage of the word is incorrect.

Actually, nowadays you can use the term 'fuck' or 'fucking', or pretty much any word beginning with 'fuck' in just about any context.

Pretty sure people are better off studying English themselves to improve. Much better than having people work as phone auto-correct for you. Both short term and in the long run.

The other way to improve is to actually proofread before hitting the "post reply" button :P. Errors will eventually slip by if you never do it. And will start showing more often the more you ignore that. Correct sentence structure never hurts but I never care about people thinking I want to eat grandma. (They know themselves!)

If you can understand almost everything you read and deliver what you want to say most of the time correctly you are already good enough :P.

Meanwhile, I just sit here reading, writing, and speaking English without giving two fucks about the rules and whatnot because it's not something I consciously worry about. I'd be a shit English teacher.

Although if someone bothered to 'fix' my signature I'd get a cheap laugh out of it.
