IRC Clients

#1

Post by MrSetharoo » Mon Jul 15, 2013 11:05 pm

For almost a year I've been using the IRC Client within IDE which is ZRC...

I've been wondering what you guys use as IRC clients because I'm thinking about changing clients.

ZRC is pretty good for basic chatting, but if you are looking to step up a level, I would recommend mIRC with NNScript, KVIrc or AdiIRC.

HexChat
It is a fork of XChat and it's way more up to date.
It's both for Windows and Linux and completely free.
https://github.com/hexchat

It supports many scripting languages including Perl, Python, Ruby (Need Plugin) and TCL.
The Perl/Python scripting format is very similar to irssi.
AFAIK it's also backwards compatible with XChat Scripts and plugins.
There is a few XChat scripts here: http://digdilem.org/irc/index.cgi?type=Xchat

It also has a fairly Customizable Interface, can change the way every Text Event looks, DCC Support, Auto Replace, Custom Sounds, Logging, NickServ (And possibly Q) Support, Internal Updater and plenty more.
Gotta see it for yourself.

Hexchat.

While mIRC goes for every feature under the sun, I like the minimalism of hexchat while staying user-friendly. Excuse the colorama all over the place, I have it set for random colours per person.

It's also cross-platform.

AdiIRC is rather small but rich portable client, it could pose as good choice after ZRC. KVIrc is a steady cross-platform open source client.
You gotta visit the links for full list of features and screenshots.
With NNScript, which is an addon for mIRC, you get all the features of mIRC plus many enhancements to make an IRC nerd's life easier (kinda matching Dark-Slayer's client above). The downside is that it's not updated anymore and mIRC isn't free.

An IRC that's not free? that's kinda silly...

I may use KVIrc, usually open-source programs are a major selling point for me because i'm broke as fuck. I know they're usually of good quality as well because they're made from passion of programming and not just to make a quick buck and if I have a problem with it more than likely someones made a addon that fixes the issue.

HexChat looks good as well so ill give that a look as well

I use Chatzilla, but the downside is it's a Firefox plugin, so you can't use it unless you're already using Firefox.

Hexchat's site is down, and installing cygwin and stuff to compile own IRC client is kinda overdoing it.

I am using mIRC, even if it's shareware, and, most annoyingly, doesn't allow to save settings for single network besides startup scripts.
nnScript sounds cool, I'll check it out!

Edit: tested, it's indeed cool, but it uses old mIRC version, and the newest one has text to speech... I really like text to speech.

Shared keys will now be in Zandro! Thanks devs for their work, and users for the support!

Yeah, I've picked up both Hexchat and KVIrc, and I've gotta say I'm not a big fan of Hexchat. It feels rather clunky to me. Even though KVIrc can be confusing I've been able to work it out so I may use KVIrc.

How is that possible, Kilgore made it so it can't be modified. Also using ZRC means you like Kilgore.
