I remember that. There was a whole "Wall of Shame" thing at the time, that I remember including him, ARG's Firefox, and even ALMN at one time.

It was not Skulltag's finest moment.
How dare it include me. The only "wall" that should include me is the wall of greatness

fuck yeah i bumped this dead thread, what are you gonna do about it? come fite me

EDIT TO CONTRIBUTE TO DISCUSSION: Remember when servers were full and people played competetive game modes and it wasn't all jumpmaze, GvH, Zombie Horde, Complex ballsack, BrutalSack, survival fuckboi supreme? CTF on the daily with good players, the SKULLTAG GAME MODE, that shit was rad.

They weren't. The golden era you're speaking of is when Skulltag was at its' lowest playercount.
ALMN wrote: and people played competetive game modes and it wasn't all jumpmaze, GvH, Zombie Horde, Complex ballsack, BrutalSack, survival fuckboi supreme?
No. It never was like that; most people were playing any mods/survival back then too. Take your nostalgia goggles off.

Most of the good players were at ZD during that time. Again, take goggles off.
ALMN wrote: the SKULLTAG GAME MODE, that shit was rad.
People stopped playing Skulltag as soon as its' newness wore off. Whereas Capture the Flag has been proven to be a great gamemode that is still played to this day.

Shit homie you must be remembering something different.
Catastrophe wrote: They weren't. The golden era you're speaking of is when Skulltag was at its' lowest playercount.
The "golden era" i'm talking about was a pretty long time. Playercount fluctuated but there were still a couple of full servers at pretty much any given time
Catastrophe wrote: No. It never was like that; most people were playing any mods/survival back then too. Take your nostalgia goggles off.
Of course they were. But there were also a lot of people playing competetive modes, where if you fire up Doomseeker today, you'll mainly see coop and survival, with a couple of TLMS on stuff like MM8BDM. And 90% of the coop/survival servers have Brutal/Complex Doom or AoW on. Used to be some solid coop that wasn't over-complicated by adding all the mods. I don't dislike Brutal/Complex Doom, but personally I enjoy classics like hr/hr2, av, etc. without all the mods.

Good players. Not THE BEST players. You could join a pub ctf with competent players is what I'm saying.

I can't dispute that. It's a shame though, I really enjoyed the ST game mode

I mean for a while (if 96f was the same "Golden Age" for you as it was for me), gameplay mods were limited to what they could do because the engine was pretty crippling for modders, having next to no DECORATE support and random crashes for any and every reason. It created a minimalist environment where modders had to be clever with DEHACKED (and DEHSUPP whatever that is) because they had a limited number of overall frames, actors, and logical sounds for any given mod. This, for the most part, pushed gameplay at the time more towards making unique mapsets using the original hard-coded gamemodes. Most servers didn't have these dehacked mods on them and the ones that did were usually eweps.wad or icd-deh.wad or Ben Nukem bullshit or even some of my earliest wads (any wad filename prefixed with xxx-. If you find any, send them to me.)

The older of us grew up with that kind of a mod environment so that's naturally something we're fond of but the overabundance of mods you see hosted today is a direct result of Skulltag's updates with G/ZDoom and its tenfold increase in compatibility and flexibility. For better or worse, depending on what you want to play and how many people are playing it.

I'm not talking bout any certain versions, mainly just the period from probably around 2003-2010 where I played regularly. The height of that was probably 2005-2007. I don't dislike the fact that the engine has become more malleable and more compatible, I just don't like how the balance shifted from oldschool style gameplay with a competitive nature to over-the-top newschool with a more cooperation-centric nature. I just want to play some sick coop/survival without all the extra nonsense :(

I ain't been around because the scene just ain't been that fun for me homie. But whether or not i'm here or not, dem thighs will live on.

Also official announcement for ALMNwad Returns: Revengence part 3 "Back in Black" make me some maps

Host it yourself. There are people who will play.

Though I do wonder how some people have managed to play alien vendetta for years straight without getting bored...

You missed the rule number one to get a server with players:
step 1:join you own server
step 2:make a umber btw 2 and 4 people to join your server.
step 3: wait
step 4: voala, people are joining
Projects
Cursed Maze: DONE, V2.0
Zombie Horde - ZM09 map update: [3/15/13]

Vanilla survival was played everyday up until Complex Doom came to the scene. Which isn't a bad thing, because vanilla doom became hella boring

What about SuperGod's HardDoom survival servers that were packed everyday circa 2009-2010? I can still hear the Red Faction chat sound playing endlessly in my head.

"Doom but better" mods have been around since 97b practically, it's just that now it's even harder to find vanilla-only servers because there are even more mods on the scene.
