Personally I don't miss ST the engine, I'm just reminiscing a little. Zand is certainly a technical improvement over ST.

While this is true, I think he meant community wise, what memories we have here.

I miss the fact that there was a FFA or a TDM happening every day.

Also <DRZ> was good times and the fact that cyber taught me how to RJ

I mostly remember when GvH was a thing. Also the early days of Jumpmaze without all this record shit and DRZ/MS.

And DBZone, Supergod's servers (The hell happened to him anyway?), and all the Invasion people would play.

All of this minus the (SD) and Wolfygirl parts, i'd rather not remember that.

I started playing Skulltag (offline only, I don't know why since I had Zdoom on my computer too) around 95k i think, because I wanted bots and ZDoom's cajun bots sucked ass. I mapped quietly and didn't really get into the community until 96f. From what I remember everyone was playing Drown In Blood and UDM3 TDM nonstop back then. DECORATE wasn't supported so all weapon/monster mods used the very limited DEHACKED lump, and that's where I started modding.

Dark-Assassin wrote: I also remember using a dehacked patch on the client side to allow the use of more frames for 3D model animations. Too bad that was made a protected lump. :(
I remember that! I also remember a "hack" called NOCLIP.wad that was going around which was a wad with a DEHACKED lump that you could put in your Skins folder which put BRIGHT on all player states (a "chameleon" hack?) and also made spectators able to noclip through the map (which was actually really useful and is now a feature anyways).

my experience switched pretty quickly; I went from playing around in zdwars/gvh chilling with ammar spider and other gvh norms to messing around in ctf with mlk, I, pro etc
Theres also the moment when ammar was accused by every1 for hacking the very moment he entered the competitive scene

And for personal ones: Joining in 2005 being 10, not knowing what the fuck I was doing playing duels with a KB only getting wrecked lol, eventually joining [SA] in early 2006 january and thus getting to know all the older players from back then, and pretty much humiliating thomas.

Hey, I'm still there, honey.

One thing worth mentioning is Dwango5 duel servers assuming the role of IRC channels, having 12 or more people just sitting there and chatting nonsense. Forced people to acknowledge F8 as a godsend. I'm glad this custom died off, along overly popular chat binds and Voltlock's questionable quality duel maps. Not like his state of art AOW levels are any better, but that's a story for another day.

Now that I think about it, I miss a-lot of stuff from the Skulltag era. Though I have some funny memories!

- Supergod master bans me for 10 seconds.
- Dev'ing Invasion Unleashed
- Frequent fraggits (also fragging) with The Club
- [WINNER] vs ARG and the drama that happened
- Old versions of ZDoom Wars and how the virus class would not only rekt players, it also rekt servers too!
- GVH receiving a 6/10 from the Skullstuff reviewing team. A shitstorm occured after that.
- Apothem's awesome voice acting
- Rick rolling people by pretending my old web server back in the day was hacked. Cool april fools joke!
- Mixing UDM2, with pyewad and nuguns... fun times were to be had.
- #skullrant
- ALMNwad
- Wolfygirl drama was some times funny
- The all mighty vote ban system on the forums.
- Cyberhunter

Now for memories that I still remember... but I wish i fucking forgot them with a passion.

- Wolfygirl... no seriously anything related to wolfygirl needs to be forgoten
- Someones dick (was visible when ST forum got hacked)
- Hypernova/sonic. Found out something very terrible about him

Well well if this isn't a surprising yet nostalgic post to come across :p

Krypto is still around.. he went into hiatus just before Skulltag officially died and the aforementioned clans submerged into the murky depths prior to that peculiar event, resulting in him taking an extended break from the port due to it's gross inactivity/dead period during that phase sometime around 2011. Then returned around 2012 to find nothing much was being played apart from survival during the whole Chillax fad and became engrossed in that, but not before deciding to change his name for some arbitrary and random reason I can't recall, possibly due to competitive and regular Skulltag modes long being dead and finding most of the people he knew had vanished and presto here I am!

As for recalling favourable memories, prior to the release of the critical yet infamous 97B you could find regular games of Deathmatch or CTF daily, mind you this was before Invasion, Survival, LMS or Possession even existed.. so the modding scene wasn't particularly alive at that point and you could still savour the original port's intended gamemodes extensively  Then following the release of 97B around Winter 2006 albeit it being controversial due to the release clearly being rushed as it was full of numerous bugs, the most memorable one being the Netcode was buggy/whacked which resulted in Carnevil leaving and infighting amongst the development team.

Yet wow look new game modes! I recall when Survival was new and their was no 'Lives' variable which was a pretty big thing, as for the first time ever in online Doom cooperative was a challenge, giving you only one shot to get through the map actually forcing you to play seriously making it pretty damn popular amongst classic hard megawads such as Alien Vendetta and Hell Revealed. Also when the vast array of cool new customized mapsets were created to supplement both new and old gamemodes like RageCTF, TLXSCTF, STLMSV3 and Domination! You could regularly find an action packed game of CTF, LMS, Skulltag or if your lucky Domination being played on the Weekends leading to long 2-3 frantic battles.

SA was pretty awesome, I wouldn't call it a serious scrimming clan but it was damn fun otherwise with regular weekly tournaments xD DC was full of all the high tier European Doomers, many laughs were had with random scrims back in the day. I honestly can't recall how big SD was or who was in it, apart from yourself, Wolfygirl and Untrustable, although I can't recall exactly what the drama was about now it's best to leave it as it is

For me the downfall of Skulltag occured around late 2009/2010 when the port was flooded by mods, namely GVH and it became a new fad but it also seemingly replaced the port's original gamemodes. Following that it was very rare to see CTF, LMS, Skulltag, Possession etc being played in regular public servers outside of FNF events of course, which led to most popular players abandoning the port and the only real item of interest remaining being random games of survival every now and then.

Oh and no one can forget when Supergod resigned mysteriously and suddenly leading to all his servers vanishing which really crippled the European player base as he hosted the majority of popular/regularly played servers.

That being said.. Zandronum is a great continuation of Skulltag seeing how it's constantly gaining new features and supplemented with some very nifty mods but as for the player base and mood, it just can't quite replicate the old days of Skulltag. I still play from time to time albeit survival and occasionally FNF and SNS, but the days of old are gone and I don't have the time for anything competitive if I still had the interest anyway but GG's are still had every now and then.

First of all, welcome back again!

Second of all, if the downfall came around 2009/2010, competitively, later, I've seen a lot of privs, scrims and clans. But mods and modern games did eradicate some of the activity of the competitive players, which is rather sad as it continues to this day. Zandronum overall can bring the competitiveness back with its new unlagged which is pretty good if I say so myself.

Otherwise, drama and clans come and go, so do players. We just have to face the fact and continue on.

I remember when Skulltag had a full 32 player LMS server, it was chaotic but really fun, I came out on top a few times.
Wish I still had the screenshot.

What I miss about the ST days is actually seeing something worth playing when I open up IDE. I see nothing but mods anymore which is part of the reason I quit ages ago.

Mods have been played for ages, I see duels and pub CTF every day. I think Faerlyn is just being angsty about mods because nobody plays the duel pack with plagiarized maps he made. Mods have made great improvements, and on the basis of your avatar I think you might enjoy this.
Love how you are attacking me for no reason. You should honestly grow the fuck up. By the way I love how people act as if I stole the maps... I've mentioned to people that map02 and map04 of my duel wad were made from older maps, I just never updated the text file besides the date since it was just three maps, except for v1.4 of the wad. Try this http://hard-doom.webs.com/Doom%20Stuff/FaeDuel14.zip its from a year and a half ago, I just never updated the forum threads.

Yeah but she and Ghastly did make HardDoom which was all anyone played on Survival servers a few years back (when SuperGod hosted it on his official servers), and still gets hosted and played on a fairly regular basis.
