But I also like the singleplayer of Quake 1.
The game is challenging, the music is great and so are the maps.
The art style is brutal and the addons are great as well.

Im near to finish all the fan expansions of Shadow Warrior (97) and this game is really awesome.

Like BLOOD, this game has a lot of weapons and Alt...the riotgun can be a normal shotgun or semi-auto (4 shot directly).
A lot of items in the inventory, flash bomb, smokebomb (who make you invisible), gazbomb (like the flechette of Hexen, a poison effect but which dont stun).

The level design is pretty good too, it reminds me DOOM in a way, sometimes, if you find a key or others, some ennemies can appear, sometimes, you can be against like...10 ennemies, you can kill them quickly but they can kill you quickly too.
In SW, even if it's fast paced, you must take care a lot (about corners), specially with the ennemies like orange/red evil ninja who can throw grenades and missiles....you can't rush often in this game but sometimes, you can, like with in normal demons (like the green guardian).
The IA is very interesting, a normal evil ninja can crouch to dodge your missile, they can crouch and move away to go in an other place, they can swim (over the water), they can climb a ladder (i was surprised by that o_O ), walk and shoot at you with the uzi. The ghost kamikaze are special too, they run at you to explode with their bomb, and then, they can become a ghost who fly, shoot fireballs and disapear sometimes!
Also, this game is harder than duke nukem, because the ennemies do a lot of damage, a grenade from a red/orange ninja can kill you in 1 shot...(but they dont use it often).

Duke Nukem 3D is very good, but i havent liked a lot the level design...specially for the "enemies spots", too random i think, but it still very fun.

Maybe just the musics who are not so awesome like in DOOM or BLOOD. ^^

While Doom is my favorite true retro FPS pre-2000. My favorite GAME pre-2000 in somewhat of an FPS fashion has to be Hellbender.
Spoiler: Image from my Hellbender Source Port in the works (Open)
