Any of you guys use windows XP?
RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
If you're still using windows xp then you're asking for trouble. Windows 8 improves on xp and 7 in a lot of ways. Lower memory footprint, faster booting, better task manager, better file transfer details, better search functionality, iso mounting built into the os... It's just better in nearly every way. And metro just isn't as bad as people are making it out to be. In windows 8.0 it was bad, but now in 8.1 update 1 it's very usable and I find, more useful than the start menu.

It seems you're unaware of things like a non-Windows machine between your and the internet. For example, a router or legit Unix PC.mr fiat wrote: its shocking how many people still use xp, is no one aware of the security issues?
Also I've used XP once, but then bought a new videocard and found out that it's hard to get it running properly on XP.

RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
This. Though I disagree with the start menu notion. It is a pain in the ass to either right click the little desktop tile (or windows flag on the taskbar), or hit windows key + x to find the control panel/command prompt/powershell. I didn't find the metro UI to be that bad, though felt it should have stayed in RT as opposed to forcing it onto desktop computers as well. Though it can be avoided pretty much all together by going straight to desktop after boot. I only ever used the metro UI to find the MMC console or search for other admin tools. Despite that, I still use 7. I don't care for the charms buttons or how the computer settings are handled via the settings charms buttons (I know that you can access this stuff from the control panel as well), mousing over to the bottom left or right corner to get to said options is a nuisance.. I avoid using them as much as possible. Some things in 8 are harder to find.Carpathia wrote: If you're still using windows xp then you're asking for trouble. I don't think 8 is better in every way. It isn't as bad as people make it out to be, but I understand why people don't like it. I personally don't mind it, but hopefully Microsoft listens and sees that a tablet interface and desktop computers don't really mix well. As it makes doing anything a little more involved out to be a hassle.

Whoa what?Carpathia wrote: iso mounting built into the os...
I didn't think they'd actually implement that
RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
This is how you go about mounting an iso in windows 8. It's a very nice feature, especially for a device with no cd drive like my tablet. I hope microsoft don't remove metro in windows 9, but at least make it optional to keep the die hard start menu fans happy, as "CHANGE IS BAD WAEIGFNBHASEDWFWENPW"

RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
what I herd windows 9 probably won't be called windows 9, but it will have DX12 built into it, this probably will be what windows 8 was supposed to be, bloody ballmer rushing shit like an idiot.
RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
Some sort of a good change is more than welcome in newer Windows verions... but don't essentially rid of what's been there since 1995 and make it confusing to properly navigate on a desktop than a tablet.Carpathia wrote:but at least make it optional to keep the die hard start menu fans happy, as "CHANGE IS BAD WAEIGFNBHASEDWFWENPW"
I shouldn't have to waste five minutes trying to find something I could've found in seconds with a simple Start menu.
It's nice people have been able to mod it in, but I'd rather see it back without the need of fellow Window users.

Too much media -- rumors on the internet is not exactly news nor accurate.kitteneater wrote: what I herd windows 9 probably won't be called windows 9, but it will have DX12 built into it, this probably will be what windows 8 was supposed to be, bloody ballmer rushing shit like an idiot.
If you are not going to upgrade to a modern Operating System, - fine, but atleast update to Windows XP Service Pack 3.Nati46 wrote: XP SP2, Too lazy to install new os... and I'm satisfied with what I have.
My laptop does have W7 tho
Metro UI isn't going anywhere. But, however, the Start Menu will return to Windows. Though, probably not until Windows 9 [citation needed].Carpathia wrote:I hope microsoft don't remove metro in windows 9, but at least make it optional to keep the die hard start menu fans happy, as "CHANGE IS BAD WAEIGFNBHASEDWFWENPW"
And for the rest of the readers: Reasons why the Start Menu was original changed: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011 ... -menu.aspx

RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
Well, win8 is heaven for tablets but can get irritating as hell for mouse\PCs. Tiger's link about "why the start menu needed replacement" kinda shows they knew it wasn't perfect and instead replaced it with an even more cluttery solution.Carpathia wrote: This is how you go about mounting an iso in windows 8. All bashing about the startmenu and metro remain goofy because just taking a glance at the "post your desktop" topic almost everyone keep their regular programs on the desktop itself.

RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
I have a multi-boot system between 8.1 x64 and XP x86.
I've been neglecting booting into XP for months on end now, but I'm too lazy to remove it either. :P
Tell me this. Would having multiple operating systems, each with different architectures, on the same computer heighten security issues?

I'm stuck on XP SP3 until I can get a graphics card for another rig I have laying around that can use Windows 7, so single core dinosaur for a bit longer I guess. :(

RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
Can elaborate a bit further? Do you mean just having the partitions in general or when the OS is active?Oddbrother wrote: Tell me this. Would having multiple operating systems, each with different architectures, on the same computer heighten security issues?
Generally, as long as the other OS's are on another partition, it doesn't matter -- if one OS from DISK 0 PART 1 gets hits with a horrid malware, the other OS from DISK 0 PART 2 will be untouched from the malware. That is unless you pick up some really bad virus\malware that corrupts or destroys the MBR, but in this case - recovering the MBR damage is possible.

RE: Any of you guys use windows XP?
I used to use XP a while ago... before 2010, I think?
I had to put up with Vista for way too long - before Q3 2013, when I upgraded to 8. Heck, I don't even use Classic Shell or the like, I have shortcuts to my stuff on the start screen and it's like nothing happened.

At least it won't be called something as uncreative and ballsy as "Windows 9".kitteneater wrote: what I herd windows 9 probably won't be called windows 9, but it will have DX12 built into it, this probably will be what windows 8 was supposed to be, bloody ballmer rushing shit like an idiot.
