I had NO idea what in the world I was doing back then. (I do now, though :P)
and now if you joined a server like that you'd likely see me rocket jumping from corner to corner of the map :V

That pretty much sums it up. :P

EDIT: Also, it was map16, which wasn't any more helpful.

Join a rocket jumping server on Zdaemon,
have no idea what rocket jumping is.

Thinking it would be a weapons mod where I would have rocket boots or something.
Run around for about 15 minutes being confused.

Player joins and rocket jumps.
Mind is blown, continues to play rocket jumping for like, ever.

Playing UACMN and wondering why I couldn't live for more than 20 seconds.

Most of those things sound pretty familiar. I my self am still learning from time to time, like the best ways to combine splashdamage and monster infighting, or learning another trick in ZdWars.

But still, my most wonderful experience with computergames was the first time I went on-line: I got Return To Castle Wolfenstein and as we all know the game is epic for both single and multiplayer. One day, I convinced my parents to allow me to dial in and I entered the first server I could find: Instagib Goldrush. Damn. Just. DAMN.

1. Rocket PEs at close
2. Waste BFG ammo at everything
3. Get mad at DM
4. Never strafed
5. Died always at MAP10
6. Used idclip on MAP02

Thinking any weapon is worth anything in DM besides SSGs.

When I first played MAP30 (when I was like 10), I used to think that you could just shoot it anywhere in the face enough times and kill it.

Hurrrrr.

I've learned through playing really good players that the BFG isn't actually as helpful as one may think. It's good against players who can't/ don't know how to dodge it, but if you've ever played people like Devastation, then you know that it's useless.
1) Jkist
2) It's not that useless!

And thus, thinking that the SSG should be awarded at spawn or otherwise strewn around en masse.

The very first time I played Doom, I thought you had to shoot a cacodemon right in the eye with a pistol to do any damage...

Hmm... let me remember my noob moments....
1. carelessly falling in lava pits trying to get items that monsters drop namely shotguns
2. just unloading pistol shots into monsters that don't die from it quickly enough and then dieing myself
3. getting lost in big maps even with automap on (i still do some times)
4. trying to punch a cyberdeamon to death
5. getting into traps that can clearly be seen ( i rarely do that now days)

Uh.
That's not really a newb error, but for about an year I was thinking that the blue carpet in the very first room of E1M1 is water. Also, my only point of playing Doom was to jump in that carpet and pretend I'm swimming.
Hey, don't look at me like that. I was four.
Next year was spent with beating the first level with cheats and fearing to proceed because of a possibility to die. Nevermind that I'm under IDDQD.

I can't remember my errors much now. I do however remember failing the D2MAP02 jump. I do remember furiously trying to find a door or something in the end chamber of E1M8. And stuff like that.

I also thought that zombieman is the weakest enemy in the game. How foolish I was back then.

I thought the gibbed bodies were evil hands in the floor. Seriously.

Also I always tried to find a way to "get out" of the maps so I could go to those grey mountains in the sky texture.
