Upgrading

Alright. With all the new fancy stuff coming out soon (looking at you battlefield 4), I figured it was time to upgrade from my Q6700 processor to something with a little more kick. Problem being, I'm torn between two builds. From what I've seen, the i5-3570k is a solid performer that should last quite a while, but it's a dead set...thus no more 1155 chips. Though, people are also saying that the newer FX chips from AMD are going to be utilized more and more as time marches on.

So there's my dilemma. Either go with the intel side of things and know that it will perform well enough:

i5-3750k 3.4ghz quadcore
ASUS mobo
evga gtx 660
8gb ram
2tb drive

Or bank on the potential future of AMD:

FX-8350 4ghz octa-core
Asus mobo
sapphire 7950 HD
8gb ram
2tb drive

I'm honestly leaning towards intel at the moment, but what are your guys' thoughts on this? I plan on purchasing either one of these relatively soon, birthday is just around the corner.

when it comes to gaming CPU isnt as relevant anymore as it used to be esspecialy with battlefield games.

even tho the FX-8350 is pretty darn powerfull and cheaper too boot, not sure about the GPU tho, id say go for the amd one.

Absolute Intel cpu. Buy Haswell, its Intel newest cpu.

I think both are good bets that will last for a few years of high-end gaming (unless something really drastic happens in the gaming world), though maybe you should get an intel with octacore, then it will perform even better than AMD, I think most i7s are octacores.

There have been problems with the octa-core processor.
So I'd say go for the intel - Nvidia setup. It's better.

NO, none of the i7's are octacore, most i7's are quad cores with HYPERTHREADING aka 4 cores 8 threads, however the i7 extreme chips are 6 core cpus with 12 threads.

also @ruin for gaming rigs its best to spend a bit more on the gpu then on the cpu as the video showed that i posted earlyer.

*edit* avoid ASUS motherboards they are realy bad and break very fast. get a gigabyte board or MSI

I got an ASUS motherboard though, and it seem to be pretty slick to me, you think I should get another one instead?

I appreciate the input guys. I did end up going the AMD route. Everything is pretty quick. A lot faster than my old set up. Quieter and runs at lower temps too. Problem right now is that my previous power supply isn't manly enough to handle what I bought. So I'm limited to playing games that don't rely on the gpu. As soon as I play a 3d game, it just shuts down completely. I even tried running Furmark and it just kills it immediately. I ran Prime95 with no issues. At first I couldn't tell it was on until I checked my cpu usage. Everything was running smooth as silk. I can still play doom on software mode for now until I run down to Fry's to pick up a better PSU. At least, I think that's going to be my next step. I'm not 100% certain if that's the issue. I don't have another PSU to test with.

That's what I get for trying to save money and re-use old stuff :V

Wait, don't do that! Check your drivers first! I had a similar issue from installing non-modded Catalyst drivers on a Sony VAIO.

The drivers are fresh, as well as windows (clean install). I ran AMD's program to fully remove the drivers and re-installed them again. The same issue kept happening. I'm fairly certain it's the psu.

You make huge mistake buying amd cpu. Amd cpu are slow and power hungry.
What psu you have? Dont tell only how much watts your psu have. I need brand and model too.

I have 45W desktop AMD CPU from 2008, it runs above 40°C only when I use it at 100% even after I overclocked it. And it isn't really slow. Intel is still out of my budget, so...

also @ruin might want to get a beefy PSU from a quality brand like corsair, id reccomend something like CX600.

Corsair CX (Expect CX400 which Corsair doesn't sell anymore) and GS series are bad quality Corsair power supplys. My CX500 broken half year. XFX 450w power supplys is good and cheap.
